The Tuesday Morning Purchase: May 22, 2007

A couple of nights ago, I had a very strange dream. Though some of the details have faded, the gist of it was that me and some of my 'friends' were going to break into a huge antiques co-op. Why? I have no idea. It seemed to make perfect sense in the dream. So this place was out in the country, because I remember walking along the edge of a huge field as we approached the building from behind. The back door was unlocked, so we pushed it aside and stepped into the basement. The room was large, with a wooden ladder off to the left that lead up to the first floor.

So far, a fairly normal (boring even!) dream sequence.

As we head over to that ladder, I notice a man lying on a mattress on the floor. My cohorts seem unfazed by his presence. He appears to be surrounded by piles of books and pamphlets. In his hands is a copy of Mein Kampf. On further inspection, all of the material around him is related to Adolph Hitler.

I ascend the ladder to the first floor. One of my friends has a short conversation (in German) with Mr. Nazi Literature. It seems like everybody knows the man.

We continued on with our adventure, which involved some lock-picking, secret passages, and....well, at that point the dream morphed into something else that I can't recall.

The point of this is not that any of the music I'm about to discuss in any ways sounds like my dream. No, what's important is that dream functioned as a kind of brain reset. They get strange like that for me when I'm very, very tired. Afterwards I feel amazingly refreshed, even when only a few hours of sleep have gone by. Music can do the same thing. That's why a week that tilts toward the "out there" is still a good week. You may have no experience with the likes of Death Ambient or Debashish Bhattacharya, but maybe it's time to step outside of your 'normal.'

Big Plans
Mannish Boys - Big Plans (Delta Groove Music Inc.)/Blues

It's takes more than a little balls to attach your band name so closely to the great Muddy Waters. Well, it appears that these guys can deliver the goods with some unadorned, gutbucket blues.

Debashish Bhattacharya - Raga Pahadi Jhinjhoti (India Archive Music)

I own Debashish Bhattacharya's Calcutta Slide Guitar and it's nothing short of stunning. One very different approach to the guitar.

"That's why a week that tilts toward the "out there" is still a good week."

Come On Mark...Then you ruin it by putting the new Ozzy release?!? I don't waste my energy hating Ozzy because there are quite a few new Metal releases out that are really good, it's just that his material is far from "Out There". Truly, it's just plain old boring crap with lyrics that don't make you think much at all.

And they got the drummer from FNM... That pisses me off!!! I feel he could do alot better...

geezuz man, did i say everything on this list was out there? no. sorry, somehow it give me comfort that Ozzy pisses people off, even in his supposed lameness.

never liked FNM, by the way.

Aw, Mark, I have to disown you know for the FNM remark. Their older stuff hasn't aged so well, but King For A Day and Album Of The Year, both albums that fans and critics kind of wrote off initially, have held up and turned out to be their best material. I put it up there as some of Patton's best work, actually. If you haven't heard them, give those two a shot - drastically different than what came before.

I have to agree with Tom.. KFAD & Album of the Year are two of my favs(Most FNM "fans" never "got them" anyways) but Angeldust was such a pioneering statement for them though it is dated. Between the Buried and Me released a killer tribute version of "Malpractice". Anyways, Puffy is just a kick ass drummer and his talent is being wasted (My Opinion)

Mark... Like I said, Ozzy doesn't piss me off, I USED to love his solo shite and will always give him credit for those two worthy albums but his new stuff is just like his reality show...Pointless and not worth mentioning.

Again, thanks for the enlightening on The Bad Plus. That album is so good when I wanna chill out and that Tom Sawyer cover f*cking kicks!!

i look at Ozzy as a kind of cartoon... which is why i was able to enjoy the show i saw a few years ago (can't remember which year... Rob Zombie opened)

funny you should mention Angeldust. that was the record that i listened to when a big fan/friend of mine recommended them. i just remember not liking it at all. maybe i should revisit it.

i think of Ozzy as a sort of cartoon character of metal, which is why i enjoyed the show i saw several years back (with Rob Zombie opening).

funny you should mention AngelDust because that's the cd i listened to and didn't like all that much. maybe it's time for a revisit.
