Book Review: On The Move by Bono

When Bono, the lead singer of U2, was asked to speak at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC in 2006, no one knew what to expect. The same is true when one opens this small yet powerful book. The pages are filled with the words of Bono’s speech and with photographs that he himself took on his first trip to Ethiopia in 1986.

Though On The Move is a restatement of Bono’s speech, it is also a call to action. It tells the story of how Bono became involved with relief efforts in Africa and how we as Americans can bring about change on the African continent. Bono reports that America currently gives less than one percent of the federal budget to foreign assistance.

As he pointedly states, “Look at what happened in Southeast Asia with the Tsunami. 150,000 lives lost to that misnomer of all misnomers, ‘mother nature.’ In Africa, 150,000 lives are lost every month. A tsunami every month. And it’s a completely avoidable catastrophe.”

Bono's words are moving and the reader will be challenged to become a part of the solution for Africa. And readers can begin by simply purchasing the book. All royalties from On The Move are being donated to The ONE Campaign.
