Published May 07, 2007
It's mostly slim pickin's this week, but a couple of new books by a top-notch stand-by and a reliable bestseller beef things up a bit.
FICTION:
Up in Honey's Room by Elmore Leonard
“Sig Heil, y’all.” But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Prolific master Elmore Leonard sets his 40th novel at the end of WWII. U.S. marshal Carl Webster, introduced in 2005's The Hot Kid, is searching for Jurgen Schrenk and Otto Penzler, German POWs escaped from their detention camp in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. They end up in Detroit holing up with Walter Schoen, a butcher and dead ringer for Hitler henchman Heinrich Himmler. Enter Honey “Sig Heil, y’all” Deal Honey Deal, Walter’s wisecracking ex-wife, who sets her romantic sights on Carl and sets into motion further hi-jinks and heavyduty adventures that includes a dysfunctional German spy ring led by a Mata Hari-like spymaster and her psychopathic, cross-dressing manservant and lover. In addition to such a complex plot and subplots, Up in Honey's Room also promises Leonard’s trademark on-target dialogue and colloquial prose.
The 6th Target (Women's Murder Club Series) by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
In this installment of James Patterson's Women's Murder Club series, San Francisco police are searching every crook and nanny to find out who is snatching kids and their nannies off of city streets. The fact that the kidnappers aren’t demanding any ransom stymies lead character Lindsay Boxer as she juggles this case, which takes a horrifying turn, and her personal life with a new love.
