Music Review: Client - Heartland

Ultimately, I think the album’s greatest flaw is that it never reaches something higher. Goldfrapp does songs that are similarly catchy and poppy, but feel more substantial. “Ooh La La” may draw on a lot of influences, but it innovates in a way this work doesn’t. That feels like the synthesis of elements to create something new, this feels more like imitation. Now, I love 80s synthpop, so having a group that would fit right in with that era of pop works fine, but the album never reaches the heights of the best of Goldfrapp, or even Rachel Stevens’ recent Come and Get It, which featured a plethora of catchy and resonant pop songs.

But, that doesn’t discount the fact that this album has a lot of strong songs and great moments. Goldfrapp only has three albums, Annie only has one, so there’s plenty of time for more icy cool synthpop divas, and the three in Client can fill that gap. On their next album, I’d like to see them push in a darker direction, away from the obvious fluffy songs and closer to the darkness of tracks like “Heartland” and “It’s Not Over.”
