Book Review: Death on the Flop by Jackie Chance

Death on the Flop, by Jackie Chance, is a mystery written around poker. It's a clever title, with the last word in the title referring to the first three cards turned over by the dealer for everyone's use. A simple game is nothing compared to what happens behind the scenes.

Belinda Cooley kisses her job goodbye after she catches her boss with another woman. Ben, Belinda's twin brother, thinks he has a way to cheer her up. He takes her to Las Vegas to watch him play Texas Hold 'Em. This is not just any game, since one of Ben's opponents is Steely Stan. The man's moniker refers to both his playing and lifestyle upon leaving a table.

"Character" describes Stan perfectly. He is rumored to have his paws into everything Vegas, whether public or private. Not only does he take part in games, but he also has policemen who walk away at the first sign of trouble. Of course, knowing Stan, those same cops are in cahoots with all he touches.

With a name like Chance, writing books about games isn't a stretch for the imagination. This author throws in intrigue with an abduction. When Ben fails to show for the tournament, Belinda realizes she must take his place at the table. Since her initial and last name match her brother's, she decides the switch just might work. There is only one problem. Belinda might be able to hold a job, but the intricacies of poker are elusive. Along the way, she meets a man named Frank. He tells her his business is security, but it's clear he does not work for the hotel hosting the big card challenge.

So who is this mystery man? Belinda has her suspicions, but she knows Frank is the way she can find Ben. Business skills aside, Belinda needs someone who understands both players and territory.

Shady people plus a quick-moving plot make for an interesting story. Chance shows readers there is more to this tale than meets the eye. Belinda, once she takes care of business, is kind enough to provide a few tips for those who find poker fascinating but could not tell a straight from a flush.
