Q: How Bad Was Johann Sebastian Bach's Temper?
Published March 30, 2007
A: Sure, you know Johann Sebastian Bach the world-famous composer. But did you know he was also a world-class thrower of temper tantrums? Well, it’s something one of his students in Leipzig found out the hard way.
After accosting Bach for insulting his bassoon playing and calling the professor a “dirty dog,” Bach promptly retaliated by drawing his sword. (Apparently, the 18th century was an era during which teachers were expected to carry swords). He then proceeded to call the student a zippelfagottist. (It’s German for “[expletive] bassoon player.”) Luckily for the pupil, some other students intervened to stop an out-and-out duel, but the composer didn’t exactly apologize.
When told that he shouldn’t attack his students, a peeved Bach reportedly took a walk to calm down. Specifically, the hot-headed composer hiked 230 miles to attend a concert by an organist!
