Music DVD Review: Dionne Warwick - Live In Concert

One of the side benefits of the Burt Bacharach revival of the mid-'90s was that it led to a critical re-evaluation of the career of Dionne Warwick. Given that she had spent much of the previous 15 years or so singing sub-standard material and shilling for the Psychic Friends Hotline, it was questionable whether or not she would get her due in her lifetime.

With her place in pop history all but assured, she can now spend the rest of her career selling out concert halls, and her new DVD, Dionne Warwick: Live In Concert finds her in fine form on the last night of her 2005 U.K. tour running through many of her greatest hits.

Warwick, understated and elegant in a blue outfit, opens the show addressing the crowd for five minutes, dedicating the performance to her mother, who would have been 85 that day, discussing her song selections, and inviting them to sing, clap, or dance along should they feel the urge.

After a medley of songs from movies, like "Here I Am," "The April Fools," and "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head," she talks about her beginnings as a gospel singer before delivering Kirk Franklin's 1993 hit, "Why We Sing" and the traditional "Children, Go Where I Send Thee," taught to her by gospel legend Mahalia Jackson, in which she brings out a looser side of herself rarely seen on her pop recordings.

If you're not predisposed to gospel, have no fear, because immediately afterwards come the hits, beginning with a 1-2-3 knockout combination of "Don't Make Me Over," "Walk On By," and "Anyone Who Had A Heart," the songs that established her in the early '60s as a unique new voice on the pop music scene, demanding R-E-S-P-E-C-T several years before Aretha Franklin came into her own. "I'll Never Fall In Love Again," "Message To Michael" and the always-leaves-a-lump-in-your-throat "Alfie" are also performed beautifully.
