Movie Review: Pride
Published March 21, 2007
Based on true events, Pride tells the story of Jim Ellis, a charismatic schoolteacher who changed lives forever by founding and coaching an African American swim team in one of Philadelphia's roughest neighborhoods.
The year is 1973, and Jim Ellis (Terrence Howard), a jobless, college-educated African American is down on his luck. Being refused teaching and coaching positions from the private school sector, Jim must take a janitorial position at an abandoned recreational center in Philly's most impoverished area. Jim's job is to prepare the center for demolition, but he sees an option — he fights back with the help of the recreational center's custodian Elston (Bernie Mac) and City Council Member Sue Davis (Kimberly Elise) to refurbish this down and out facility and start the city's first African American swim team.
Terrence Howard, an Academy Award nominee, delivers a strong and uplifting character as Jim Ellis. But what is most impressive is comedian Bernie Mac in this dramatic part as an older and wise custodian who seems to be the backbone of Jim's plight. I never thought he had the range to do these types of roles, but I was wrong. Bernie is quite good.
Jim Ellis becomes a youth mentor who struggles to transform teens from the street into a capable team. He finds a group of six guys and one girl to make up his team, but his opposition is racism as exemplified by swim team coach Mr. Bink (Tom Arnold), violence and drugs represented by a local drug dealer named Franklin (Gary Sturges), and the lack of pride from his swim team members Puddin' Head, Walt, Willie, Hakin, Andre, and Reggie (Brandon Fobbs, Alphonso McAuley, Regine Nehy, Nate Parker, Kevin Phillips Scott Reeves, and Evan Ross).
Of course this inspirational film is predictable but it is quite the testimonial to motivate an audience to remember the influential power of one person. This is a triumphant story about team spirit and courage in the face of overwhelming odds. If you need a "feel good" film to watch, this is one that should be on your list.
