Comic Review: Marvel Comics The Mighty Avengers #1

Oh yeah, I almost forgot! The Sentry is a member of this team, too! The Sentry sucks balls. Call me biased, but I can’t wait until there is someone powerful enough to smash in the face of the man with “the power of a million exploding suns.” Yech. I don’t know why he was created, because there has yet to be anything about him that interests me.
So in this issue, the first challenge the Avengers have as a unit is a bunch of monsters who have decided to surface from underground. If you’re a Fantastic Four fan, then you know who may be behind these monsters attacking, but there is more to this threat than the Avengers know.
Manhattan is not the only place in the world that is in danger, and the obvious villain may not be the actual villain. When suspect number one shows his face, he opens up those suspicions. Even he couldn’t be behind what does happen next.
There are lots of thought bubbles in the inaugural issue of The Mighty Avengers. In fact, this is the most thought bubbles I have ever seen in one book for as long as I have started to read comics again. The thoughts are mainly used as jokes, and for me, there is maybe one too many of them. It felt like Bendis got a little too excited with the concept and went into thought bubble overdrive.
Art is the average you can expect from a monthly title. I think Frank Cho’s having a fantastic time putting in a healthy amount of detail into as many scenes as he can. I hope that he goes for a new look with some of the characters. Wonder Man’s shit is looking a bit odd, and I think that Warbird might need a style switch right about now. Plus, Black Widow could at least get some kind of designs on her suit. She’s much too plain.
So Mighty Avengers is good, but not great. Definitely count me in for issue two, and we’ll see which way the wind blows after that.
