Comic Review: Marvel Comics The Mighty Avengers #1

After fighting in a brutal war amongst all of his friends, you would think that Tony Stark would take a load off and enjoy his new role in S.H.E.I.L.D. Not so much. In the first issue of Brian Michael Bendis’ The Mighty Avengers Tony Stark has decided that the world still needs the Avengers, but he’s not going to lead them.

While he may be taking a lesser role than expected, Tony Stark still puts on the Iron Man armor and fights side by side with a few old Avengers and one wildcard. If you have been reading Avengers titles for at least a decade, then most of these faces aren’t new to you. You have Wasp, who’s joined the team without her husband Yellow Jacket at her side. She can decrease her size at any time and her suit allows her to fire blasts of energy at her enemies.

Next up is Black Widow, an ex-Ruskie who has long since lent her talents as a soldier to the US of A. She has no powers, but with the right gun, she’s quite dangerous. Wonder Man is an actor, a stuntman, as cocky as he is superhumanly powerful.

A first-ever member of the Avengers is Ares, who is not only the god of war, but he is also related to Thor. As he is described in this issue, he is “a Thor and a Wolverine” which doesn’t exactly sound like peanut butter and jelly at first, but once you see him, you know why the description fits.

Like his hammer-swinging brother, Ares speaks in the same manner that all those Norse Gods speak, but he’s a hairy, angry guy who can chop things up really good. See? It’s Wolverine meets Thor! Ares is easily my favorite character thus far. I don’t know much about him, and I’m exited to learn more.

The most important member of the team is Warbird, who has been given the chance to not only choose who becomes a member, but she’s also the head of the team on the field. Why Iron Man sees her as the best fit as leader for this version of the Avengers is not completely clear to me.
