NCAA Tournament: Can Anybody Reap A 1-Seed In The Second Round?
Published March 15, 2007
Months of office productivity will finally pay off today as we offset our overachieving with constant attention to the first round of the NCAA basketball tournament. All eyes are upon potential first round upsets. Will it be the 12-seeds over the 5-seeds? 10s over 7s? A scrappy 14-seed over a 3?
While you suckers are splitting hairs over the first round, we here at BC aim high and look at upsets over 1-seeds.
No, not against a 16-seed, silly. We tried that last year with little success. But one of those pesky 8- or 9-seeds appears poised to come out of nowhere and sucker punch one of those top seeds on cruise control.
The feat is one that happens every few years. The last 8-or-9 over a 1 seed was in 2004, and it happened twice: 8-seed Alabama over Stanford, and 9-seed UAB over Kentucky. The 1s have taken care of business in the second round for eight straight games. But this year? Perhaps I simply have a desire to see it. But I smell a second round shocker. (And Wichita State isn't even in the tournament.)
Last year, the group of 8s and 9s was rather green in terms of tournament experience. Sexy mid-majors like UNC-Wilmington and Bucknell were among the pack. This year, the pedigree is a bit stronger. We have six teams from power conferences, including five former national champions. This year's least proven 8-9 would be Xavier, with 17 tournament appearances and 11 wins. Those school accolades were more impressive than four of last year's 8-9 teams.
8. George Washington vs. 9. UNC-Wilmington
8. Arkansas vs. 9. Bucknell
8. Kentucky vs. 9. UAB
8. Arizona vs. 9. Wisconsin
Total tournament appearances: 142
Total tournament wins: 161
Total Final Fours: 13
Total championships: 9
2007 NCAA Tournament
8 and 9 Seeds
8. Arizona vs. 9. Purdue
8. Kentucky vs. 9. Villanova
8. Marquette vs. 9. Michigan State
8. Xavier vs. 9. Brigham Young
Total tournament appearances: 202
Total tournament wins: 253
Total Final Fours: 16
Total championships: 11
Note: We're assuming all the first round opponents of 1-seeds lose like the adorable, obedient 16-seeds that they are.
South - (1) Ohio State vs. (8) Brigham Young or (9) Xavier; Lexington, Kentucky
Uh, look somewhere else. Ohio State doesn't lose to good-but-not-great teams, while Xavier and BYU were unable to win their conference tournaments like they should have.
