TV Review: American Idol 6: The Top 12 Is Announced

Written by Toni Dimayuga

There weren't too many surprises on American Idol as the Top 12 was chosen, but I'd say at least one person shouldn't have been voted off the show. The show started with its usual crappy group song. This week the gang sang "Stuck in the Middle With You," which is a great tune if you're in the mood to torture a police officer by cutting his ear off. I swear, who the hell picks the group songs?

After a boring recap of the past two nights, Ryan got down to business. He asked LaKisha Jones and Blake Lewis to join him onstage and, after confusing them a little, told them that they've both made it to the Top 12. LaKisha and Blake sit on the opposite side of the stage, where 10 seats still remained empty. Ryan then asked Chris Sligh to come onstage and told him somberly, "You are not... gonna find out until after the break," after which Chris spontaneously combusted from the stress. Or not. Not surprisingly, after the commercials Ryan told Chris to have a seat next to Blake.

Jordin Sparks and Phil Stacy were asked individually to approach the stage, and both were given the green light to the next round. Phil looked like he was going to pass out. I guess even he thought he blew it this week. Then it was Jared Cotter's turn. As I predicted, Ryan told Jared that his journey had ended. Ah well. He looked a little surprised. Poor guy thought that he would actually make it. Damn shame. Jared performed one last time and headed off into the sunset.

Melinda Doolittle and Brandon Rogers were next. They were asked to come onstage at the same time. Ryan asked them if there's room in the Top 12 for both ex-backup singers, and after Brandon said, "I hope so," Ryan told them the good news that both of them had made it. Chris Richardson and Gina Glocksen then approached the stage, holding hands nervously. Ryan stupidly hinted that their handholding might mean something other than friendship, but Gina quickly reminded him that her boyfriend was in the audience. No one was shocked when both made it to the finals.

Ah, a little break. Carrie Underwood performed some country song that was pretty nice, but her outfit left something to be desired. Interestingly enough, Ryan didn't interview Carrie. I guess she wasn't promoting anything and was just there out of the kindness of her heart... or under the rules as stipulated on her contract. That's why you get yourself some good lawyers, to free yourself from the American Idol machine. You really think that Kelly Clarkson would ever set foot there again?

We're back to the executions. Antonella and Stephanie joined Ryan onstage. I heard the melodious chorus of a thousand radiant angels singing majestically in the heavens as Ryan announced that Antonella was out of the competition. I had to pinch myself to make sure that it wasn't just a lovely dream. I must admit that I almost felt a little bit sorry for her as she tried not to cry as she performed her swan song. Almost. Honestly though, I'm positive this isn't the last we see of her. She'll get a job as an "entertainment correspondent" on Access Hollywood or some other crappy gossip TV show, and you can bet that three months from now she'll be on the cover of FHM or Stuff.

"Next week the Top 12 apparently get to work with Diana Ross."

Just beautiful. They really want to play up Melinda and LaKisha.

This reminds me of AI 1 and 2, when the first finals week was Motown Week, just to make sure a white person got the fewest number of votes.

Of course since AI loves Melinda and LaKisha, they wouldn't dare start off with country week, rock week, or top 40 week.

I'll kill myself if the final is Melinda vs. Lakisha.

Hopefully NEITHER of them make it to the finals, the finals need to be Gina vs. Chris, two people who can sing, and not only that, they can sing VARIOUS types of music, not just R&B like the Aretha/Whitney wannabes Melinda and Lakisha.

Ty- I don't think that it's a black or white thing. After all, they also have country week at some point. Besides, it's possible that Melinda and LaKisha may cancel each other out like what happened in Season 3. I personally think it would be awesome if Chris S. were to win. I love Gina as well, but she has to be careful about screaming the song.

Suckjaya needs to go home.

TY: Having Diana Ross is not playing up the black singers. She is associated with many different types of songs that any singer with a good voice can sing. She was NOT a strong voiced soul singer. She has a very thin light voice, which is why she was made the lead singer of the Supremes to, appeal to white music buyers.

On the other hand, having the Beatles week that they have been talking about in the news is totally going to help the white singers.

Also, I just want to say Sanjaya is like a new version of Johnny Mathis. They both have a wonderful understated quiet style. I don't think that Johnny Mathis who has perfect pitch could win on Idol. It's for loud showy people. Sanjaya should be given a chance to show his talent.

autt- I've said this in another thread, but Sanjaya has been given THREE chances already, and he was horrible every single week. What about giving AJ, Nick, Paul, or any of the other eliminated guys a chance? Jared Cotter was a better, more mature vocalist than Sanjaya, but he didn't have the fanbase that Sanjaya already had.

Sanjaya has two major problems. One is that he keeps picking the wrong songs. Another is that his performances are lifeless. Sanjaya relies on his cute smile and great hair to get the votes, and that's a real shame.

But don't worry about him. Like many past weak teenage contestants, Sanjaya will outlast a few of the older, better, more mature contestants. I'd say he'll be around for at least two more weeks.
