TV Review: American Idol 6 - Top Eight Girls

It's like night and day between the guys' performances and the girls'. I will seriously be shocked if a guy wins this year, because the girls are collectively so much better. Almost all of the ladies belong in the Top 12, but of course two will be leaving us this week. Again, I'm rating the performances by letter grade.

A

Although I was disappointed that LaKisha Jones came out with Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing," she showed this week once again that she absolutely deserves to be in the Top 12. Simon said that she brought passion, talent, and believability, and even added that she looked beautiful.

Melinda Doolittle seems to be hunching a little bit less these days, and ended the show on a high note. Randy called her the hottest one tonight. Simon was beaming and said, "You little tiger! I thought we had a pussycat!" Yeah, I think that she's pretty much in the Top 12 as well.

B

Jordin Sparks took a risk with Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker," which is great and all, but she was screaming it for the most part. Randy said that her performance was better than all the guys from the previous night. Simon thought it was a little shrieky, but that she was full of personality.

Sabrina Sloan channeled En Vogue with "Don't Let Go". Like Jordin, Sabrina screamed too much in the song. I love this song and know that it's supposed to be sung in a sensual, calm manner, but it wasn't. Simon said that it lacked emotion and was too mechanical.

Stephanie Edwards sang some Chaka Khan song, but Randy wasn't impressed since he couldn't help comparing her with the original singer. Paula thought it was flawless, but that she needed to stay with the music (then how could it be flawless, Paula?). Simon chastised her for being a bit of a copycat, and that she needed to find her individuality.

We got some Evanescence from Gina Glocksen, who rocked the hell out of the song. She rocked it a little too hard though, since she screamed most of it. Randy happily said, "Finally, the real Gina came out!" while Paula warned her about the oversinging. Simon said that it was the first time he saw her look comfortable and really hopes she'd make it next week.
