This week 52 serves up a sci-fi cake, with a bloody cherry on top and a bit of horror on the side. Week 31 starts on a faraway planet where the brave metahuman known as Captain Comet explains his origins and the extent of his powers while trying to save the inhabitants from what seems to be a hideous invasion.

Two members of the Green Lantern Corps, the buglike Xax and the human Thormon Tox, also come to the aid of this planet. They received a distress signal from a purple-hued native. Once the threat has been defined, now all the heroes have to do is repel the invasion and all is saved, right? Wrong.

What proceeds is a lot of gruesome disemboweling, dissection and chaos. These invaders are not playing nice, and they have no mercy for anyone, be they innocent bystander or powerful Green Lantern. I know who is behind this world takeover, and if you’ve been following along, you know who these wicked hordes represent as well. This horrible massacre just reaffirms just how screwed the lost space heroes are.

Back on the good ol’ planet Earth, Natasha Irons and her new friends, the members of Infinity Inc, have a conversation about their disgusting roommate. The only interesting thing about this scene is that appearances can be deceiving, but that’s to be expected when you’re involved with Lex Luthor.

Cassie, better known as Wondergirl, meets Raplh Dibny. Dibny’s still looking for answers, and he shows Cassie what he has uncovered since they last met. Never mind that, though, because Ralph meets the still mysterious Supernova, and he’s got the new hero figured out. Just tell us who it is, Ralph! I think if you’re a better reader than I, then you’ve guessed the answer just based on Dibny’s hints.

Before this issue ends, it’s back to the carnage, and we learn the outcome of the invasion, with the space heroes and Lobo looking on at a distance. I don’t think Captain Comet ever saw this coming.

This week’s biography is about the latest Boy Wonder, Tim Drake. In two pages, we learn why Tim Drake is the best kid for the job, and why he makes as good a leader of the Teen Titans as he does a sidekick for the Dark Knight.
