TV's Beauty and the Geek Proves Looks Are Deceiving

I'll admit it. I shed a tear or two during last night's emotional farewell to the CW network's Beauty and the Geek. After all, my heart's not made of stone — like, say, Cecille (the only "beauty" to not only not grow or change at all as a result of her experience on the show, but also to take pride in the fact that she didn't change one iota). And, of course, I was rooting all along for Jennylee and Nate — not to win, since they weren't even on the same team, but to hook up (duh!).

Last week, I was thrilled when the group, spurred in part by Nate's wise words, chose to award the winnings to Scooter and Megan, both of whom grew and learned from each other, which was, after all, the point of the whole show.

If you never watched the show, here's the 411:

Created by producing team Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg (of MTV’s Punk'd fame), Beauty and the Geek pairs eight “gorgeous but academically-impaired women” with eight “brilliant but socially-challenged men” to test their intellect and social skills — the winner taking home $250,000 in cash. (And to clarify, “gorgeous” is a stretch and very generous in some cases, such as Cecille, who started off average and, as more and more of her personality emerged, became downright ugly to me.)

During the show, the geeks try to teach things to the beauties, and the beauties try to help the geeks achieve socially. And for the past two seasons, there have been hookups as well, proving that sometimes opposites do attract.

Yes, Beauty and the Geek is another one of the many, many reality shows on TV. The difference is that in this case, the show has heart — the payoff wasn't so much the monetary reward the winners received, it was the growth they experienced along the way. Which, in my book, makes Beauty and the Geek a gem.
