Dutch Derby: Ajax Overpowers Feyenoord
Published February 05, 2007
Ajax were looking to humiliate Feyenoord Rotterdam again, but after 30 minutes in the first half Ajax looked pretty vulnerable. A severe punishment like earlier this season in stadium De Kuip was kept from the Rotterdam team. The 4-1 final score was convincing enough.
Ajax were very strong in especially the first 35 minutes of the match. They drove back Feyenoord, forcing the club from Rotterdam to play on their half of the pitch.
Ajax dominance manifested itself in the score. After 30 minutes of play it was already 3-0. Wesley Sneijder opened the score for Ajax with a free-kick going in off the back of a frightened Feyenoord defender Tim Vincken.
The second goal was even more aesthetically pleasing than the first. Sneijder, again, sent centre forward Ryan Babel on his way, who seemed to take it a dribble too far but managed to pass wonderfully to the Ajax team captain, again, Sneijder, who scored the 2-0.
Not much later it was Babel again who found Belgian teammate Tom de Mul completely free. De Mul escaped his direct opponent Ron Vlaar and scored with a hard shot on goal hitting the roof of it.
Ajax lost focus a little after the 3-0 and Feyenoord took advantage of that. A strong display of defender Tim Vincken who managed to escape on the right side crossed the ball to Angelos Charisteas who scored the 3-1.
In the second half both teams refused to give in but despite that the match was still an exciting one. Ajax still dominated but their defense seemed insecure and Feyenoord managed to create opportunities through that.
Charisteas hit the post for Feyenoord while Babel and De Mul wasted oppertunities. Sneijder made sure Ajax took home the 3 points as his goal struck the final blow 5 minutes before the final whistle.
Ajax are closing in on PSV Eindhoven with 5 points behind while taking a 1 point lead over AZ Alkmaar.
This match also marked the comeback of Edgar Davids.
