Music Review: Elliott Brood - Ambassador
Published January 31, 2007
If Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Ferrell had dropped acid and joined a band in San Francisco, instead of moving to L.A. and becoming part of The Sunset Strip’s underbelly of experimental artists, it is a good bet that band would have sounded a bit like the music of Canada’s Elliott Brood.
Seriously, I don’t know what it is about Canada that produces such amazing artists, but I’m now convinced there is something up there that we’re not getting down here. Maybe it’s the water or the generous health care system, but any country that has produced talents like The Guess Who, Neil Young and now Elliott Brood must have a secret weapon.
Just to be clear Elliot Brood is the name of the band and not the name of some make-you-wanna-puke-your-guts-out American imitator like James Blunt, who’s song You’re Beautiful gets my vote for the worst song of 2006.
No, instead Elliott Brood is a band whose songs project a mood of a time long gone, almost like a good period-piece film. Songs like “My Friends” and “The Bridge” are haunting in their sonic ambience. It is refreshing to hear a band put this much love into their music instead of into their public image.
The biggest compliment I can pay Ambassador is to say that much of the album's material reminds me a lot of The Black Crowes when they strip down to acoustic mode. Being that The Black Crowes are my all time favorite band, I hope Elliott Brood takes that as a compliment. I am suddenly very envious of my friends who have dual citizenship.
