Trioncube to Puzzle Gamers in February

Namco will be looking to unleash some story-driven puzzle action onto the Nintendo DS next month with the release of Trioncube.

It will be up to players to defeat the villainous Hell Metal and rescue the princess. As captain of the spaceship Penko, players will have to keep the ship fueled with Trioncubes.

Trioncubes are formed on the puzzler's playfield by aligning blocked pieces into three by three cubes. Once a cube is stacked, though, players are encouraged to continue stacking pieces to add on to the cube and maintain chains. Making cubes and chaining them propels the Penko faster through space toward its target goal.

However, if the player places a piece that fails to continue the cube's chain, the chained blocks then turn into coins which are removed from the play field and accumulated in an end-of-level tally. By saving up coins, players will be able to purchase new effects and arts displayed during game play.

While the game begins with straight-line and "L" shaped pieces, once a player travels through space and hits a new dimension, new styles of blocks enter game play and further complicate progress. The game has five different shapes in total, which can be rotated to fit where necessary.

A total of four different game modes will be featured in Trioncube. The arcade mode will have players travel through eight planets to defeat a space monster, a princess awaits rescue at the end of a 45-level mission mode, a challenge mode will feature 99 different dimensions to traverse and multiplayer will see who can fill their ship the fastest.

Currently, the game is scheduled to be published by Bandai-Namco and released in North America for the DS on Feb. 20. However, gamers can get a sneak, playable peak of Trioncube on the game's official Web page.
