The Early Word: New Books for the Week of January 29, 2007
Published January 28, 2007
Last week was weak on non-fiction titles. This week the spotlight's on some interesting books in science, religion, history, health, biography, and more.
NON-FICTION:
God: The Failed Hypothesis by Victor J. Stenger
The subtitle is How Science Shows That God Does Not Exist and the author also wrote Has Science Found God?, The Comprehensible Cosmos, Physics and Psychics, and Not by Design. So he’s been thinking about this topic for a while, and garnering arguments for the primacy of reason from such fields as physics, astronomy, biology, and philosophy. In addition to taking a close look at human behavior in regards to the notions of prayer and the afterlife, Stenger is, in the pages of God, also thorough in religious realms with his consideration of the issue of Intelligent Design, and the concept of God as conventionally presented in the Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions.
Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast: The Evolutionary Origins of Belief by Lewis Wolpert
Taking a different tack than Victor J. Stenger in the previously listed book, God: The Failed Hypothesis, Wolpert's science-based book considers the issue of religious and supernatural belief from more of a human perspective. Citing evolutionary science, Wolpert maintains a connection exists between early human language and tool making and the development of cause-and-effect beliefs. And bringing a more modern bent to the subject, he discusses how brain abnormalities, hypnosis, and psychedelic drugs can lead to false beliefs, and concludes that faith sometimes falls into this category - though he doesn't discount religious belief altogether.
The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography by Sidney Poitier - Oprah's Book Club Edition
Stenger and Wolpert above might think they have all the answers, but in reality it’s Oprah’s world - you’re just reading books in it. This time you’re reading a new edition of Sidney Poitier’s memoir.
