DVD Review: Idiocracy
Published January 27, 2007
A woman recently decided to use her three children as pylon cones to practice for her driving test. A man and his son robbed a city-owned garage and stole GPS devices. These two true stories come from 2006 and are early proof of human de-evolution. Think how bad this will be come 2505.
Idiocracy sends Luke Wilson into the future via government experimentation. When things go wrong, his supposed one-year journey into the future keeps him locked down for 500. America is a very different place.
People are stupid. Okay, they're stupid now too, but as time passes and stupid breed the stupider, things get worse. Five-hundred years from now the free world is ruled by a current pro-wrestling champion, the #1 movie at the box office is Ass which is nothing more than that, and the top television show is Ow, My Balls. People have become so sterilized by a dumbed-down society, they’ve lost any and all reason to think for themselves.
Director Mike Judge shows through in the comedy, making a fart joke or a kick to the crotch somehow relevant to us all. It may be set in the future, yet the film is completely about our situation today. Either you'll understand that or you won't, which will directly effect your enjoyment level.
Visual gags are abundant. Some require you to pause the movie and make sure you've seen it all. The selection board at the hospital is a recommended stopping point.
The film requires repeat viewings. It's impossible to catch everything the first time through. Dialogue exchanges are rife with wit and quick jabs at current society. Paying attention is the second measure of how well your first experience with Idiocracy goes.
The film is so relevant, you're not sure at times if you're supposed to laugh. Is Ow, My Balls meant as a depressing look at the audience's taste in modern television, or is it funny because a guy is repeatedly being hit in the crotch? At the very least, you'll never watch the latest reality TV shows the same way again.
