Nintendo again unleashed a number of announcements today, commenting on U.S. Nintendo DS sales and dropping this upcoming week's downloadable goodies for the Nintendo Wii.

Wii users can expect an update today, as the system's online News Channel finally comes into fruition with Nintendo's partnership with the Associated Press (AP). Downloaded through the News Channel option on the Wii Menu, the option will provide stories in multiple categories worldwide.

Much like the weather service available on the system, the News Channel will feature a virtual globe that users can spin in order to choose locations of worldwide news events. Specialty news categories will include items such as business, sports, arts/entertainment, technology and science/health.

The feature will use the WiiConnect 24 capabilities to continually update the news stories available. Users will be able to change the size of the text and some of the AP stories will even feature news photos.

With yet another Wii download, available today, gamers will be able to slap down more Wii Points on two new Virtual Console titles - Mario Kart 64 and the Turbografx title Soldier Blade. Mario Kart 64 will cost 1,000 Wii Points.

Following Europe's announcement of 10 million Nintendo DS units sold in the territory, Nintendo of America is now preaching the same claim in North America. Nintendo is billing the handheld as the "fastest-selling video game system in the world," averaging the sales figures out to nine systems sold every minute since its November 2004 release.
