Nintendo Releases Q3 Results
Published January 26, 2007
Nintendo, always eager to throw out statistics, once again releases another sales milestone as the company wraps up its third quarter of its current fiscal year.
The Nintendo DS recently reached the title of fastest game console in European history to sell 10 million units. The figure means nearly four million units have been sold in Europe since September when, according to Nintendo European Marketing Director Laurent Fischer, the DS "topped the six million mark."
Launched in March 2005 in the territory, the system sold 1.7 million units in December alone. Nintendo notes the DS software is key in the sales with New Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart DS, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Animal Crossing: Wild World each tallying up a million units sold in Europe. Nintendogs has kept more than five million Europeans busy tending to their pooches since October 2005 and Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old is Your Brain? has racked up more than two million copies sold.
In order to keep DS units selling strong, Nintendo is pointing to Mario Slam Basketball, Star Fox Command, Actionloop and Final Fantasy III as key 2007 releases ready for launch.
Strong holiday sales of the DS and Wii wrapped up its third quarter on Dec. 31, reporting huge increases in sales over its previous same nine-month period in 2005. The company state its consolidated net sales increased by 72.8 percent while its operating income rose 102.5 percent.
Through 2006, 19 of Nintendo's software titles reached or surpassed 1 million units - three Wii titles, 13 DS titles and three Game Boy Advance titles.
People have also been taking advantage of Nintendo's first real push for online gaming on the Wii with nearly 1.4 million systems connected to the Internet worldwide and about 1.5 million Virtual Console games have been sold to customers worldwide. For gamers on the go, more than 3.5 million unique users have played a game using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, tallying more than 100 million connections online.
Nintendo has already pumped out 4 million Nintendo Wii systems to end 2006 (selling 3.19 million of them by the year's end) and is sticking to its goal of providing 6 million units by the end of its fiscal year in March.
