27th Annual Razzie Awards: The Ultimate Film Achievement

Written by Chris Beaumont

Not to be outdone by their shiny big brother, the Razzie Awards committee has announced the nominees for their top prizes, the Golden Raspberry. Outside being mocked by Rosie O'Donnell, this is the highest honor that a movie can achieve. An award that is so treasured, so deeply valued, that only Tom Green has dared show up to receive it in person. No other actor, director, writer, or producer has felt they were worthy to be in the same room as it. The mere mention of the award, lovingly nicknamed "The Razzie," is enough to bring goosebumps to the mightiest that Hollywood has to offer. Read on and see those films whose utmost commitment to quality has afforded them the opportunity to vie for the prize.

What follows are some of the most notable films to hit the screen this year. Among the stars that can be glimpsed in all their radiant glory include Sharon Stone, Tim Allen, Paul Giamatti, Nicolas Cage, and Marlon Wayans. Not to mention such notable directors as Ron Howard and M. Night Shyamalan. Well, enough of my blather, here are the nominees, and my special choices for who should be so honored.

Worst Picture

  • Basic Instinct 2
  • BloodRayne
  • Lady in the Water
  • Little Man
  • Wicker Man

There really is not much competition here, the steaming pile that is Basic Instinct 2 walks away in a landslide. These are all wonderful examples of the fine art of film, the combined artistry of writer, director, and actor combined to give us this fine entertainment. Despite that dedication to quality, the Sharon Stone stunner left its audience with their collective jaw dropped and a tear in their eye.

Worst Actor

  • Tim Allen (Shaggy Dog, Zoom, Santa Clause 3)
  • Nicolas Cage (Wicker Man)
  • Larry the Cable Guy (Larry the Cable Guy, Health Inspector)
  • Rob Schneider (The Benchwarmers, Little Man)
  • Marlon Wayans & Shawn Wayans (Little Man)

In a stroke of pure genius, Tim Allen was able to give his complete attention to three features this year. In each one he gave his signature performance, forever marking them for all time with his stamp of approval. It takes a most dedicated performer to offer a distinct aroma throughout the cinemas for a good portion of any given year. However, he wouldn't be walking away with the prize, oh no. That honor belongs to a brotherly duo in a film that I have never even seen, that is how good it was; it was above me and wouldn't give me the time. The brothers Wayans are the esteemed pair to lay claim to the prize.

Worst Actress

  • Hilary Duff & Haylie Duff (Material Girls)
  • Lindsay Lohan (Just My Luck)
  • Kristanna Loken (BloodRayne)
  • Jessica Simpson (Employee of the Month)
  • Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct 2)

Kudos on the hilarious take on the Razzie nominations.

"only Tom Green has dared show up to receive it in person."

Haley Berry showed up to receive hers for Catwoman.

I know History of Violence was filmed in '05, but we still feel the effects of it today and ought have been considered.

Thanks Sterfish.

Bicho, I could have sworn Green was the only one.
Thanks for setting me straight.

C'mon, Suss, did you dislike HoV that much? I liked the movie.

CB, you should check out their site. They have clips of Berry's acceptance speech. I thought they were the only two, but in the forums I found the following:

In the entire 25 year history of The RAZZIES, only the following people have willingly collected their $4.79 worth of spray-painted gold:

Bill Cosby for LEONARD: PART 6 (Cosby arranged to have the film's three RAZZIES re-created out of 24-carat-gold and Italian marble, funded by Fox Networks to the tune of $27,500. They were then presented to him "live-on-tape" at Harrah's Lake Tahoe, and his acceptance of them was broadcast during "sweeps " on the Fox LATE SHOW)

Paul Verhoeven for SHOWGIRLS (The Dutch director became the first "winner" ever to attend our ceremonies when his film set an all-time RAZZIE record with 13 Nominations and 7 "wins." In addition to his own trophy for Worst Director, Verhoeven also retrieved the statuette for Worst Picture)

Brian Helgeland for THE POSTMAN (Helgeland won both an Oscar and a RAZZIE in the same weekend. His Best Screenplay Oscar was for L.A. CONFIDENTIAL. He arranged, after the fact, to be presented with his RAZZIE for Worst Screenplay in his production office on the Warner Brothers back lot)

Tom Green for FREDDY GOT FINGERED (When Green's wretchedly unfunny "comedy" about child abuse and playing with dead animals "swept" The 22nd Annual RAZZIES, he was on hand to collect all five of its statuettes, including Worst Picture, Worst Actor and Worst Director. Green got worldwide press coverage for doing so)

Halle Berry for CATWOMAN (Exhibiting a wonderful sense of humor, and a delightful willingness to poke fun at herself and her big budget box office bomb, Berry became the first True Star ever to appear on our stage. As the Video Clips attest, her appearance brought the house down at The 25th Annual RAZZIES)

MTS--
I too picked History of Violence as the worst movie of 2005, but it's probably too arty to make the Razzies. They go for the ridiculous [e.g., Nicolas Cage and his bear suit as worst couple] and for laughs.

I liked A History of Violence. Well acted, nicely shot, a good movie even if you could see where the story was going pretty quickly. Besides, those of us who may never get a chance to have sex with Maria Bello now know exactly what that experience would be like.

I thought HoV was one of the better films of 2005. I'm always surprised when people say they really disliked it.
