Music Review: Switchfoot - Oh Gravity!

There is no denying that the face of the American population has been rapidly changing over the last few decades. The American dream has changed from the single concept of the nuclear family into a myriad of different utopian scenarios that reflect the many different cultures, for better and for worse, which inhabit our great, if sometimes misdirected, country.

The same thing can be said for the current musical scene in America. Unlike the music of the 80s and 90s, which thrived on distinct styles, today's best music is comprised of a hodgepodge of influences and often colors outside the lines. Few bands have nailed the execution of theses new rules better than San Diego's Switchfoot.

With a double-platinum major label debut album and five well received albums under their belt, Swithfoot's sixth platter Oh! Gravity is poised for greatness. Oh! Gravity manages to mix the junkie-ethic lyrics of bands like Sublime and Nirvana with the dorm room genius of R.E.M, while topping the whole thing off with a strong dose of undiluted rock and roll and a touch of streetwise charm.

The group has also found a great deal of loyalty from fans from the Christian rock set. Overall, Switchfoot isn't quite as vehement about their allegiance to the lord as some of their musical contemporaries, yet the bands music, more often than not, shows the signs of morality that defines the genre. Because of that, Switcfoot may be one of the few bands that finds longevity in the current love-them-and-leave-them musical landscape.

Very nice article. If you've ever been to one of their concerts, you'll see why fans remain loyal. This is a group that clearly loves what it does, more so than any other band I've ever seen. They also take time with their fans after concerts, sometimes even inviting them to local coffeehouses after concerts where they play again.
