DVD Pick of the Week: Doctor Who - The Complete Second Series

This week is a bit of a step up from the past few frames. This week actually has something, a few somethings, that I want to add to my collection. The past couple of weeks have offered films I was interested in, but none that I felt needed to be added to my collection immediately, though a few are sure to be future additions. This week has not only a movie that I want to have, but a television series that will be mine within a short period of time.

This week's pick is none other than Doctor Who - The Complete Second Series. This is just a fantastic series, one that quickly found itself on the must-see list. Sure, there are a couple of episodes that don't quite measure up, but they are the exception and not the rule, and even then, the weaker episodes are still better than a good portion of what is out there.

I have never been much of a Doctor Who fan. I remember enjoying bits of what I saw when I was a youngster, but it never captured my mind the way it has so many others. Still, when I heard that a new series was being worked up, I was interested. Then I saw the fruits of their labor, the first season, starring Christopher Eccleston. I loved it! There was some brilliant stuff going on there. Then Eccleston left the show, and my heart fell, I wasn't sure that anyone could fill the hole. Enter David Tennant, he stepped in and took the character in another, equally excellent direction. Season two is definitely equal to the first, and now you can own all 13 episodes of the fantastic show.

Also out this week:

  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. It may not be a great movie, it may not even be a good movie, but it is good at delivering the bloody goods.
  • The Protector. This has a rather silly plot, but Tony Jaa is electric on the screen, and I love watching this guy fight.
  • Employee of the Month. Rather forgettable Dane Cook vehicle, although Dax Shepard does prove to be good screen presence.
  • Gridiron Gang. Surprisingly good inspirational sports drama. Dwayne Johnson is a charismatic and captures the role.
  • Seven Swords. Have not yet seen this, but Tsui Hark and Donnie Yen are more than enough to convince me to give it a shot.
  • The Animation Show: Volumes 1 & 2. I saw the first touring version, and now I can get them on disk! I think it is a great idea to collect these little seen animations together and try to get them to a wider audience.
  • Die, You Zombie Bastards! This is worth it for the title alone!
