Comic Book Review: DC Comics' 52 Week 25
Published January 06, 2007
If last issue of 52 was the funniest week so far, then this is the scariest. In having an overall theme for an entire issue, I was wondering if one of the stories would stray from involving monsters and myths. With the exception of one throwdown during a parade, you have monsters of all types running around. The first monster we encounter is a human monster named Bruno Mannheim, which if I am correct, was a villain in the 90s Adventures of Superman cartoon. He was nowhere near as vicious as he is for these opening panels.
We’ve been looking for the face of Intergang, and I don’t think that there’s a better man for the job than Mannheim. The story starts out simple enough. It’s Halloween, and the evil Mannheim stares out of the massive window of his massive office, addressing a hooded hood named Mirage about the Crime Bible and it’s many useful lessons. Before he’s done talking about the first-ever crime (Cain killing Abel), Mirage gets a good look at the bible made of stone.
After Mannheim and Mirage have their meeting, we learn that not everything’s right about Mannheim. He’s hungry, and not just for complete control of Gotham City. Bruno Mannheim’s other hunger is just, eww, gross. In our second Halloween story, we move from the land of mortals to demons as some crimson toned baddie tears up the streets as children are trick or treating. Unfortunately for this big red Sabbac, he’s jumped from the demon realm right into a beating, courtesy of the Black Marvel family. Not only do they make this the worst Halloween ever for Sabbac, but they also take him down before the on looking Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr. can even react.
Meanwhile, Ralph Dibny is still on his quest to restore his dead wife, with the help of the Helm of Fate. Let it go already, Dibny! Luckily, the Helm of Fate tries to sway him from him making a desperate sacrifice just to bring Sue back from her tragic death. The Helm takes him through a tour of the people who have lost their souls before, and they stop at Felix Faust, a DC villain who was constantly selling himself in order to gain more power.
