DVD Review: Fun with Dick and Jane (2006)

Regardless of the performances, when the film's funniest moment happens as the credits start rolling, you know you've wasted 90 minutes. There isn't a lot of humor here, even with one of the current comedy kings in Hollywood in the starring role. It's illogical, and the best parts come far too early on to keep the momentum going. ![]()
Light black levels are the main fault of the video transfer. Clarity is wonderful in this sharp looking film. A few scenes of mild compression artifacts on solid backdrops do little to hamper the overall quality. ![]()
There's little for the audio channels to play with. The 5.1 mix presents an all around fine effort without any noticeable standouts. This is a quiet movie, and the soundtrack is the time you'll find the audio as a noticeable aspect of the experience. ![]()
Extras run on the short side, aside from a commentary by the director and writers. Carrey would have been a nice addition here as he handled a producer role as well. A gag reel is always a winner with Carrey and the one included here is nowhere near long enough at three minutes.
Six deleted scenes feature multiple robberies, including a toy store run that goes completely over-the-top - it was a wise cut. A stack of trailers rounds things off. ![]()
It's sad that with nearly 30 years to play with, this update doesn't fix any of the problems with the original. Both completely collapse at the same point in the story. The concept has plenty of potential and life, but not in the way its been handled twice.
