The PS3 launched in North American with the majority of the units up for auction on eBay.

For those willing to get shot, beaten, stabbed, or worse, there was enough software to play to whet the appetite, yet not so much that you were overwhelmed with a ton of games to buy all at once.

Gamers found six exclusives on store shelves, eight cross-platform releases, and two digital downloads waiting for them at the PlayStation store.

Sure, things could have been better (Oblivion slipped, just like at the launch of the Xbox 360) but it could have ended a lot worse. A lot of games surprised me, not all in a good way.

Resistance: Fall of Man — This is easily the best game at launch, and while it doesn't give us more than a solid FPS experience, the production values are through the roof.

You play a U.S. soldier in an alternate-reality WWII Europe, fighting off alien Chimera. Developer Insomniac Games know how to make guns fun (Ratchet and Clank series) and Resistance has some great weapons.

Once you are finished with a 30 missions single-player campaign, you have a heavy dose of multiplayer options, including offline co-op, split-screen and online versus.

Stepping into a room with 40 people is not a problem, as there is no lag to drag your dead carcass through the mud. The smallest of hiccups does not tarnish this technical feat.

You have six multiplayer modes, and playing as the Chimera is half the fun.

Unless you hate first person shooters, this is the PS3 game to buy with the system.

Resistance: Fall of Man is rated M (Mature) by the ESRB for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language.

Ridge Racer 7 — The Xbox 360 launched with Ridge Racer 6, now the PS3 has 7 at launch, a slightly modified, yet superior version of the game we got one year ago.

New additions include slipstreaming, otherwise known as drafting, and car customization features.

Slipstreaming allows you to benefit from the airflow around the car in front of you. You can slingshot past if you opponent is not careful. This entirely changes online play.

Customization options range from purely cosmetic, to upgrades to nitrous, tires, engines, and plug-in units. It is not so much to be granular, but enough to add a little more to the series.

While the cars don't look that much better, the environment detail is a big improvement, as is the lighting. The drastic, and sometimes flat, lighting from Ridge 6 is out, now with a more realistic tone.
