An Unsolicited Letter To Gilmore Girls
Published December 03, 2006
Dear Gilmore Girls,
If you hadn't noticed (we, your adoring fans, sure have though), longtime show runners Amy Sherman-Palladino and husband Daniel are have flown the coop! We were worried that the Gilmore Girls we once knew would become a heaping pile of crap. Guess what? You're about to get deleted from people's Season Pass lists, and you have no one to blame but none other than new show runner David S. Rosenthal. You're almost certifiably crappy. And don't expect anyone to be fooled by the drippy, ooey-gooey extravaganza of the November 14 episode - unsubtly titled "The Proposal - as not jumping the shark, which was exactly what it did.
Fret not, I have constructed a list of what needs to be done to save you from complete and total revilement:
1. Get Rid of Christopher
Once his and Lorelai's marriage is inevitably nixed, of course (rumored to be in February, which isn't soon enough). Though David Sutcliffe and Lauren Graham's undeniable chemistry would be hard to recreate with Luke, they were meant to be. Bringing Christopher back would be an ugly reminder (of your near-failure) you won't need - once it's over, its over. His return would only signify that you haven't been able to move on, and need him to succeed - you don't.
2. Buy Rory a Pony
Or something that would stave off our diminishing interest in the soon-to-be college grad. Bring Logan back from London, have her spend more time with Lorelai, and get her away from her über-annoying "art" friends, and pitch the possible rekindle-a-romance-that-never-existed-with-Marty story altogether. Get her a job at a busy and superfluous magazine or newspaper — Alexis Bledel handles flustered well. Lastly, chop off some hair, and give her that awesome bob thing from season five - that way we won't confuse Rory with those damn Aerie Girls.
3. Explore Your Secondary Characters
Zach (Todd Lowe), Lane (Keiko Agena), Mrs. Kim (Emily Kuroda), Luke (Scott Paterson), and Paris (Liza Weil) are all characters worth investing in. Yeah, you have that lukewarm, threadbare arc for Lane and Zach's pregnancy, but it would be even better if you took some time out every week and developed it. Burn April (Vanessa Marano) at a stake, send her to boarding school, let her get hit by Kirk (Sean Gunn) driving a golf cart — we don't care, just get rid of her. And have Lorelai check to see if her parents are still alive. We miss our weekly Richard (Edward Herrmann) and Emily (Kelly Bishop) fix. And could we please have more Paris? Pretty please?
4. Buy Some DVDs
Gilmore Girls seasons one through six will suffice. Take notes, and listen carefully. Call Amy Sherman-Palladino and ask for some tips on how to write pop culture references with some bite. You'll need more than that though, so start subscribing to entertainment magazines like People, Us Weekly, Rolling Stone, Blender, Vanity Fair, Entertainment Weekly, and Premiere.
5. Get Rid of Those Aerie Girls
It's not bad enough that the youth flocks to American Eagle clothing outlets (which ironically promotes nudism) by the second; the most permeated troupe of frivolous girls are forced upon us to "discuss" the show. Hardly. These girls don't represent the far more sophisticated (and college-educated) audience that watches the show, they represent what The CW considers to be the target audience: women who have no idea what's happening in their lives, thus they live on a rock in Zanzibar.
Best regards,
Aleks Chan
P.S. More Paris please!

It's as if people had never watched TV before.
Yes, the writing is weaker this year, and some scenes meander or simply ring false, but I believe the long-term plotting is just as solid as ever. It's clear to me that the producers married Lorelai and Christopher during the first sweeps period so that they could break them up during the next sweeps period, clearing the decks for the inevitable reconciliation with Luke. If you follow the spoilers, this seems certain.
Most of the viewers who freaked out as Amy Sherman-Palladino started the ball rolling on this storyline last season expressed a sense of betrayal that the writers didn't giftwrap a happy ending for Lorelai and Luke, followed by another season-and-a-half of domestic bliss. These viewers don't have a very strong sense of the lead characters: Lorelai and Rory both make incredibly bad decisions about matters of the heart, at the worst possible times. For me, that's what makes the show watchable.
I don't get it. Why on earth does anyone think Lor belongs with Luke except that the show told us to think that? Their relationship was awful! she doesn't' joke with Luke like she does with Chris. She jokes AT Luke, teasing him, annoying him. Chris has the wit to joke with her. As friends they are okay. As a couple - no they make no sense whatsoever. Luke has to take (what must have been an outrageously expensive) gift Logan got for Rory to give to Lor on Valentine's day. Chris sets up her favorite movie on the side of an old barn to surprise her. All she and Luke did was fight. Misunderstand each other. Disagree. Can you imagine if Luke had been the one driving in the scene where Chirrs, Lor and Rory are in the car and the girls keep wanting him to change the radio station until they find something they all like? Luke would have been pissing and moaning. Chris loved it. He gets them. When Luke and Lor were together he was always crabby and she became annoying, constantly taunting him rather than being witty. And she was never true to herself. She was always afraid to say how she felt. That's a good relationship? Why? Why on earth does anyone think she belongs with Luke?
I agree with you on every point except one - I love Rory's hair! Thankfully, this doesn't affect our meeting of the minds on the much needed improvements you suggest. We can still be friends.
More Emily & Richard, more Paris dancing, more Stars Hollow and farewell to April, Art girls and the dreaded Aeries.
OMG you are my hero. YES. thank you, you have said it.
I do not hate Christopher, the relationship is just a colossal mistake. Sookie said it, transition boy is not the father of your child. and you do not MARRY transition boy.
April= Cousin Oliver. Accident? I think not. A-SP is much too smart and savvy for that to be mere coincidence. Rosenthal was left with a tough job and I think he is trying to pick up the pieces and doing okay but it's not an easy thing. I will never ever leave off watching the show. Ever. no matter what. But that said... I agree with all of your suggestions. With a few caveats.
1. Put the music back in the transitions. It lost a lot of sparkle when you lost those.
2. Give Zach and Lane a sex life. please. I feel sorry for them. Let them be locked up in their house for two weeks ...embarrassing everyone in public with their PDAs.. running off Mrs. Kim.
it'd be classic.
3. More Kirk.
I agree with what everyone has said...I can sort of see the point about Luke and Lorelai's relationship, but I also think that they have chemistry. If you go back and watch all the previous seasons, you can see that that is what it has all led up to, Luke and Lorelai's relationship has been forshadowed the entire show, and now I feel like it's just being ignored!
Amazingly enough, I miss all the annoying characters! Emily and Richard, Kirk, Paris, where have they been. In previous seasons, there has ALWAYS been a Friday night dinner, no matter what! Now, it's like it goes back and forth every week, two stories going on, Zach and Lane are only in like every other show. Which is true of everyone, including people like Sookie and Jackson too. OK SOOKIE is Lorelia's best friend, so what is up with that!?
What I miss is that relationship we all fell in love with between Lorelai and Rory...they used to do everything together, tell eachother everything etc. BUT now it's like they never even see eachother! It's like they're too busy for eachother.
I don't get the happy feeling from the show anymore like I used to. All I feel is depressed, and upset that nothing is going how we all want it to. I've missed two episodes so far this season, and you know what, it doesn't bother me very much!!!
I personally REALLY like Rory's hair, I think it's beautiful. But the Aeries need to die!!! And I agree that we need the transition music back to normal, it made the show run smoother
I was reading something that did make a good point. It said that it's easy (in reference to Lorelai, Luke and Chris) to have a show with a girl and a goodboy and a badboy. But it's harder to have a show with two goodboys...but it is a lot more interesting!!!
Lorelai and rory need to have scenes together (not just on a cell phone)
what gives???? why arent they performing together??!!!!!!!!!!
Where 'Gilmore Girls' is concerned, the story has always taken a backseat to the clever and funny dialogue and brilliant pop culture references.
Sadly, that great writing is history now that the Palladinos are no longer involved. The new show runner David Rosenthal has killed it dead.
Rory and Lorelai have each dropped about 30 IQ points. For example, the non-Stepford Rory would never have been interested in her new "friends" Olivia and Lucy, who are both so annoying that a fatal traffic accident is the only real solution.
Post-Palladino Stars Hollow is an unrecognizable, nails on a chalkboard, cringe-causing disaster but great evidence that sharp writing is what makes a cant-miss show.
Understanding that the orginal writters always set the "mood" for the show. Dave could do a lot better to make the show have the same "style" as it always had. Now we are all having to watch what doesn't seem like the Gilmore Girls. In seasons 1-6 Amy put a lot into the show that kept you laughing and crying but showing the character that are in the show. Dave, on the other hand, puts nothing in the show but stuff that fills up the required time. The real fans could write better than that! Get to the point! We are tired of watching what doesn't seem like Gilmore Girls! Watch ALL the episodes seasons 1-6 and compair it to what you have now. It makes your writing sound like crap!
It needs more of "Gilmore Girls" story line put into the show that was put into it in the previous seasons. Dave needs to put a smile on the watchers faces throughout the show instead of a straight face and stare.
I completly agree!
Oh my god... You completely ruined it for me...
Now I can't help but notice everything that's not as good as it was. And I hadn't even noticed before now! Aaww...
The new Gilmore girls bring out two things in me; heavy drinking and thoughts of police brutality. A few cocktails prior to the show is what l need, to be able to find anything on it even remotely funny. And those idiotic Aerie girls (who the hell are they to analyze anything and tell me what l should think of what we've just seen?), give me ideas much like the whipping sceen in the new Bond movie. Get rid of those dolts!
I still watch the show religiously, because the Sherman-Palladino team had me hooked for all these years, so every week l tune in hoping to get that same high they used to bring us. But sadly, more often than not, it just leaves me with a feeling of those disappointing christmas mornings where instead of a nice pair of Jimmy Choos, you unwrap a sensible pair of hideously ugly, grandma-style Keds.
P.S.: A huge YES to the "P.S. More Paris please!"
I agree Lorelei does not belong w/ Luke. Luke's just not the Gilmore type, he's whiney and complaines, but doesn't joke around and have fun like Christopher does with Lorelei and there is no chemistry. Luke doesn't even no what to do in a relationship (he didn't no to buy a valentines present) but Christopher is perfect and he's never given up on Lorelei. Although I would like to see Rory end up with Jess not Logan because Logan really isn't her type, he's one of those rich spoiled kids who always gets in to trouble because he has to much money and doesn't no wut to do with it.
Bring Back Jess!!!!
Lorelai and Luke belong together - rewatch the early seasons. They were clearly crafted as ying and yang soulmates. Yes this is a state that the writers played upon to drive them apart last season, but the power of the stories during the early years, when the show had so much more heart, clearly is crafted for the LL pairing.
In addition, watch the last shot during the show's opening. Who else is there as Lorelai and Rory talk away over their coffee?
i agree bring back jess
We hardly see stars hollow anymore, nor Rory and Lorelei together, Emily, and so on...This is definetely not the same show anymore. I can even hardly get how a man, who's not Pedro Almodòvar, could be writing on a mother daughter relationship, and that's probably why their relationship is so hanged up on the cell. Lore got married to her daughter's father and they almost never talked about it, and this sounds wierd to me. As well as the lore/luke last break-up speech, he was telling her he didn't feel good enough for her and thought Christopher was, and she just answered my hand is getting cold?! Is that it? Camon...
Amy Sherman Palladino left David S. Rosenthal in some troubles, but he definetely got them worse by making lore and Chris husband and wife, no way i'm going to like the lore luke back together stuff anymore, at least not as much as i used to, two girls are involved, Rory and Gigi, and I don't really like to see lore so immature, nor that i could like in any way this fake relationship. Amy can be very satisfied though, there's no show without her, 'cause there's no Lore without her.
p.s.
get rid of April? I'd love that, but how in the hell is this possible, ho can u get rid of a luke's daughter without killin' her?
I totally agree
I've been watching GG from the beginning, and I feel robbed, I feel like my friends Lorelai and Rory were kidnapped and no one is willing to pay ransom for them... I miss their convesations... I miss the meals at the dinner... I miss the way Lorelai seems to be the daugther, and Rory the mother
Is there any chance Luke comes back with Lorelai?... if it isn't, please send him to me :P
I definitely agree that these episodes just aren't what they used to be. I absolutely hate Lorelei with Christopher..it's like she is a prisoner! The art-exhibit girls are completely awful and I am not sure why they think calling Marty "boyfriend" all the time is funny! It's like these shows have no substance. And April? Seriously? She is no good. I can't believe we have to listen to her and her mom spaz out all the time. Rory should drop Logan..he is never around anyway and get back with Jess...at least they had chemistry!
I totally agree with all that needs to bring Gilmore Girls closer to it's previous self - notice I said closer. I'm not sure if it will ever be as good as it was, due to the writing team changes. I miss the banters that Lor and Luke always had, and I disagree that they didn't have intelligent reparte. Just because someone isn't college educated doesn't mean they can't hold their own in a Loralei/Rory dialog. Where last season went wrong is that once Lor and Luke actually got together both were so afraid to mess it up they weren't themselves - the banter got less intense, the secrets they had from each other were ridiculous because neither of them pre-relationship would have ever kept this kind of stuff from each other.
What needs to happen is Chris realizes that Lor jumped into this marriage - which in my opinion she did - just to forget the debacle that happened with Luke (or maybe it was so she didn't have egg on her face if she didn't follow through with her ultimatum). Luke and Lor need to sit down and get all the stuff out in the open, air everything, and have a mature Luke and Loralei relationship... one that rivals and dare I say out shines the friend relationship they had.
Here's an idea, at the not-wedding party that the Gilmores are throwing, this should all come to a head with Lor running to Luke just like she did to Chris - come around full circle as it were.
It would be cool to see if the new writing team can pull this off without losing all fans.
I have been watching since the pilot episode, and I find myself switching channels during commercials and forgetting to switch back more and more. So, they better do something quick before Veronice Mars is the only reason I tune into the CW.
I agree with much that has been said but I want to add one thing in particular that has not been mentioned. Shouldn't Lorelai have an std by now? I am sick of watching her irresponsible dating practices. The divorce to Christopher was the last straw for me. She needs to be in therapy. As a mother in my 40's who has been married 25 years I can tell you that I could never sit down with my daughter and watch this show. As cute as it can be at times it sends an unhealthy message. Please do not tell me this is normal behavior. If this is a reflection of our society we are in terrible trouble.

I completely agree with you. althought it is still interesting to see where they are going. the shows just aren't the same without the old writers. and with it not being the same means the end is probably this year which freakin sucks. i just got into the gilmore girls in the last year and already i have all six seasons. i've missed shows this season and haven't even thought twice about it. but in the past if i would have missed an espisode i would have flipped. and what is up with the aeerie(?) girls they are a nuscense to the end of the show. we just watched it. we don't need to know what just happened. if they are on their to get more people to discuss what just happened, on the boards, its retarded. we'll go their on our own. people always have. im dissapointed in the year and i hope it's not the end. last year wasn't the greatest because loreli and rory fought for half of the year so you would think they would try to redeem themselves this year. i just really hope this is not the end and they will continue for atleast one or two more years and make it a lot better.
