Seahawks Go Down Fighting To Chiefs, 35-28

The Seahawks are banged up. Big time. If missing running back Shaun Alexander and wide receiver Bobby Engram wasn't enough, last week quarterback Matt Hasselbeck went down just after the second half against the Vikings with a knee injury. Seneca Wallace lead the team in his place, getting his first NFL start.

On the other side Washington's own Damon Huard was questionable to start as well with a groin injury. Backing up for KC's Trent Green, Huard had been doing well with a 3-2 record on the season and a 96.7 quarterback rating.

Injury aside, Huard got the start and led the Chiefs to a dominating performance. With more than twice the time in ball possession and total yards, Huard and running back Larry Johnson put up four touchdowns along with two Larry Tynes field-goals.

Seneca and the 'Hawks held on, though. Defensive tackle Russell Davis recovered a Huard fumble in the first at KC's 7 yard-line, setting up an 8-yard TD pass to D.J. Hackett. In the second quarter, a 26-yard one-handed catch by Deion Branch followed by a 2-yard TD pass to Jerramy Stevens put the 'Hawks on top 14-13.

Huard came back strong, slicing through the 'Hawks defense. A 77-yard drive capped by a 9-yard TD pass to Larry Johnson before the half, and an 88-yard drive complete with yet another Johnson TD in the third quarter put the Chiefs up 27-14.

Down but not out, the 'Hawks weren't giving up. Near the end of the third quarter, KC was ready to add another field-goal, but the 'Hawks got lucky. Dustin Colquitt dropped the ball on the snap and scrambled to attempt a pass, but fumbled. Kelly Herndon recovered the ball and took it in for a 61-yard TD, putting the 'Hawks back in the game.

The 'Hawks defense stepped up in the 4th, holding the Chiefs back while Senecca got off a 49-yard TD pass to Darrell Jackson, putting the 'Hawks back on top 28-27.

All the 'Hawks had to do was hold the next drive.

Eight plays and 80 yards later, Johnson got his 4th TD of the day, and Huard connected with Tony Gonzalez for a two-point conversion.

Needing a touchdown to tie, all hope seemed lost when Seneca threw an interception to Jared Allen, who was run out of bounds, but at the last second Deion Branch yanked the ball out of Allen's hands to give the 'Hawks a chance. Even without the interception, though, the Cheifs defense held, and a last chance pass to Mack Strong on 4th and 15 would only yield 8 yards.

Two kneel-downs later, Huard and the Chiefs won 35-28.

Coach Mike Holmgren after the game spoke highly of Seneca's effort despite the loss.

Next week the Oakland Raiders come to Qwest Field to be seen on Monday Night Football.

Running Back Shaun Alexander showed up for Monday practice, but by the end of the day the word came down that he will be out at least one more game.
