New Songs of The Week: Witches in Bikinis, Alexa Ray Joel, More...

Hey music lovers, time for another peek at what's new in the rock world. I have about three weeks worth of material already for this story and more keeps rolling in every day. Remember, I am not making any judgments here, I'm just layin' it out for your listening pleasure or pain as applies. This week I have some really interesting artists for you to check out. There is a bumper crop of material for your iPod or even as snippets for you ringtone fanatics. The evolution of the music industry is moving incredibly fast and now even the cellular companies are jumping onboard with their custom ringtone programs. Any neighborhood band can now have a ringtone available from the major providers. Isn’t technology fun?

The first band I’d like to have you check out this week is Witches In Bikinis. They submitted themselves and how could I refuse? They are described as a theatrical rock band. I guess the theater part is that they all wear bikinis… If you think of a beach movie written by Rob Zombie you might have a pretty good picture of this band. I listened to three of their songs on the submission page and thought they were pretty cool. So if you are in the mood for a sexy dose of the Halloween spirit check out Witches In Bikinis.

Next is a signed artist who I am pretty sure not enough people have heard of. Her name is Alexa Ray Joel. Okay, the little light comes on with her last name doesn’t it? Maybe not with this generation but I am sure that there are still those out there who remember a performer named Billy Joel, right? Oh wait, just this past summer he sold out The Garden for 13 or so shows didn’t he? Well anyway, Alexa is his daughter and she has a band and career of her own. As far as I can tell her career is totally outside of her father’s shadow and I respect her a lot for that. Alexa just put out a new video this week and if you want to see if you like it you can go to her MySpace page to see it.

Billy Joel's daughter making music of her own, now that makes me feel old.

It seems like only yesterday he was writing lullabies and naming ships after her on the Storm Front album.

She definitely has his eyes although they definitely look better on her. The sound is more Nora Jones than dear old dad though.
