The House of Digg Produces New Offspring: Internet TV Venture Revision3

Revision3, an Internet TV venture backed by the likes of Digg co-founders Kevin Rose and Jay Adelson, wants the world to know that it is now a "full-fledged company" — profitable, angel-funded, and ready to (further) take the online world by storm with a slate of original Internet broadcasts that are available through a multitude of distribution platforms.

The key, Adelson (CEO of both Digg and Revision3) and David Prager (VP of Programming) told me, is that this is a new brand of online content for a new and emerging kind of audience. In fact, "Revision3" is meant to reflect a "third revision of television," one in which television and the Internet converge and meet the needs of an "edgy and niche" audience that demands entertainment when, where, and how they want it.

Much as Digg itself is attempting to leverage a massive tech/geek following to capture a mainstream audience with social news, Revision3 is looking to expand upon its base of tech-oriented shows to hit a wide variety of interests. Digg itself is an important factor in Revision3's success, in fact, as Diggnation is something of a flagship program, drawing on Digg's audience in a show that features Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht kicking back to discuss the day's tech news with a relaxed and deliberately low production vibe. Revision3 claims that Diggnation has more than 250,000 viewers a week, a figure that would put it on par with some cable news shows.

Other Revision3 shows include Control-Alt-Chicken, "a new form of cooking show for geeks," Geekdrome, a show that promises Kevin Smith-like references in chatting about movies, films, and comics, and Systm, a DIY techie show for the "common geek." Appealing to the "geek audience," it seems, is an essential part of Revision3's strategy, exulting in a love for all things tech and the culture that comes with it.

This is a different audience than traditional TV, Jay and David emphasized. There are now "hundreds of millions" of people with broadband connections, TiVo, and iPods. And Revision3 wants people to grab its stuff whenever and however they like, with distribution partners that include Apple (Revision3 shows snag many of the top slots on iTunes in terms of number of subscribers) and Palm. The Palm Treo, for instance, will come with Revision3 programming ready to roll. And taking a queue from the massive popularity of YouTube and social networking sites like MySpace, Revision3 shows are open source. In other words, they're saying: BitTorrent away, throw it up on your MySpace profile, your blog, or whatever publishing platform you like.

Nice work Eric,

I think old business models like advertising supporting programming will be the way - when you pay out $500 for the content you can afford to offer advertisers plenty of options - and keep them out of your product.
