Music Review: Christina Aguilera - "Hurt"

Written by Chris Evans
Published September 18, 2006

"Hurt," the second single from Christina Aguilera's already gold album Back to Basics, is one weeper of a ballad. From the slow opening to a soft piano all the way to the spine-tingling bridge, "Hurt" chronicles the pain and regret one can feel after losing someone they love. But what's great about the song is it's so much more than the standard, stock loved-and-lost ballad.

"Seems like it was yesterday when I saw your face/You told me how proud you were, but I walked away/If only I knew what I knew today." I'm already welled up with tears as prolific songwriter Linda Perry and Aguilera have created a song that is both truthful and heartbreaking. It's not just about death, but also about what happened before. "I'm sorry for blaming you/ For everything I just couldn't do/ And I've hurt myself by hurting you," she sings as you hear the heartrending emotion in her voice.

What can you do when you lose someone? And not only do you have to deal with the grief of their death and missing them terribly, but also the haunting guilt you feel for what you've done to them or not forgiving them for what they've done to you. There is no time left - they're gone. And now it's just you and your "hurt."

Linda and Christina really turn up the heat at the bridge where the hard percussion and the disquieting violins rev up Christina's better-than-ever power-belting vocals as she roars "If I had just one more day/ I would tell you how much that I've missed you since you've been away/ Ooh, it's dangerous/ It's so out of line to try and turn back time."

The song doesn't get officially released until October 23, but it's already gaining a ridiculous number of spins on radio - faster even, than Fall competitor Beyonce's "Ring The Alarm," which has actually been out longer. "Hurt" seems to be poised for another top 10 run similar to that of Aguilera's current single "Ain't No Other Man," which, months after its release, is still gaining airplay spins according to Mediabase.

Even Chuck Taylor of Billboard magazine raves "The force of her vocal as she relates the pain of moving past a relationship in ruins is daunting, with a melody and lush production that carries this potential Grammy Award contender into the clouds."

Listen to the song.  It'll make you cry.

Hey guys!! I agree. The song "Hurt" is very nice, heartbreaking song. The song goes with what is going on right now with the war and with all these killings in America. A perfect time... Plus, Christinas voice is so beautiful in this song and she could sing....

#2 — September 18, 2006 @ 14:04PM — Jose [URL]

this songe is gerat and it needs to get all the preace that it could get is amesing.

#3 — September 18, 2006 @ 16:02PM — gentletouchee [URL]

boring..will flop.

And her album is just gold..hohumm career. It looks like the wannabes are flopping.

#4 — September 18, 2006 @ 17:30PM — A.L. Harper [URL]

Who decided that Christina Aguilera was talented? Don't give me that "she has such great range" shite! The occasional bout of vocal epilepsy followed by lyrical diarrhoea is not talent, that's an illness and Christina needs to be treated. She is a talentless bore, who only wants fame. She and others like her (i.e. Mariah Carey and Beyonce Knowles) should be eliminated from pop music to save it for those with real talent and something genuine to contribute. Something not decided by or in a committee.

Damn I needed to say that!

#5 — September 18, 2006 @ 18:48PM — Chris Evans [URL]

Uhh...considering it was just released a few weeks ago--gold is golden.

Not sure what crack you're smoking.

#6 — September 18, 2006 @ 20:52PM — nate

its a really good song, it will defiantly get all the grammys. Billboard gave it a good review too. AWESOME vocals. Haters keep hating, Back to Basics is a awesome album

#7 — September 18, 2006 @ 21:17PM — Hurt''song,video'' of the year

The song is great it remainds me of Christina's Grammy vining song ''Butiful'' but this one is way better it probably is going to win Gramy's for sure the song is just great

#8 — September 18, 2006 @ 21:56PM — nisi

A.L Harper- Who decided Christina Aguilera is talented?

Are you insane or simply a Britney fan? Anyone who knows anything about good music would agree she has an amazing voice and what she does with it is creative, innovative and beautiful. Back to Basics is by far one of the best albums I've heard in a long time.

Hurt is a deep and soulful song, which deserves every bit of praise it's getting. Haters can hate on her for her style, opinions, etc. But everyone knows, haters and lovers, that she is the best vocalist of our generation.

'Nuff said.

#9 — September 18, 2006 @ 23:46PM — Pako

I just can't understand why haters can't just respect others opinions...as well as they want theirs to be respected, they should respect...movin' on, I have just bought back to basics without being a fan of this girl and i gotta say she's great, Lord...I loved this song...so touching and marvelously sung.

It seems you're trying to argue the point that because she's a singer, as opposed to a singer/songwriter (someone who is in complete and utter control of their art and career), that means she has no talent--which honestly doesn't make any sense.

1.) On both Stripped and Back to Basics Christina co-wrote almost all of the songs.

2.) Even if she never DID write a single lyric or melody in her entire life--how that means she has no talent is beyond me.

Saying a singer who just sings has no talent is like saying an actor who just acts has no talent--as opposed to an actor who acts, writes, produces, and directs every movie they're in. Singing itself is a miracle of a talent alone and anyone who ever HAS been a singer knows how difficult it is and what a gift it is to be able to sing as great as Christina does. And not just in terms of the "range" you're referring to, but the WAY she sings. The way she interprets the songs, the way she performs, the way she wraps her voice around the lyrics. Have you ever heard "Walk Away"? How you can say that isn't talent...I'm not quite sure.

Yes, she has people that work around her to promote her career commercially. ANY major artist has that. ANY. Including legends and icons. It's just the nature of art. Art will always coincide with commerce. But that is not enough evidence to deny this girl has talent.

Chrisina is one of the best vocalist in history! she has the fullest, most beautiful tone to her voice! She is such a powerful vocalist that really feels the song to its core! One of the best songs in history in my opinion! It always sends chills to my spine and always makes me cry!
A GRAMMY FRONT RUNNER IN THE MAKING!

#12 — September 19, 2006 @ 04:50AM — Bianca

Hurt is one of the most beautiful ballads ever created, when I first heard it it really gave me chills.

The lyrics is perfectly done. And so was the melody and arrangement of the music. But above else, Christina's powerful and emotional voice is so great. This is a sure grammy winning song.

#13 — September 19, 2006 @ 16:14PM — vincent soriente [URL]

christina has one of the most powerful voices of are time! i give her a ton of respect by not letting record labels force you to do the typical club beat or video game sound.. christina came out with a sound that introduces you people to jazz just like she says back to the basics and yes she did go back to the basics..iam also so sick and tired of people comparing christina and britney they are two seprate people. christina has the most powerful classic voice thats out there today. britney spears is one of the greatest dancers out now for female next to madonna. and in the words of celine dion '' CHRISTINA'S VOICE IS AMAZING''

#14 — September 20, 2006 @ 17:36PM — gentletouchee [URL]

Yes,weeks/month ago and still gold, flop. An album sells big on its first week and if it cannot sustain it,will flop, unless she comes up with a hit single bigger than the first. And despite the hype of her 1st single, it only managed top 10.That after joining the bandwagon of poptarts going the slutty image route.

The poster of this review is simply stating a lie, when he said that this is bigger than Beyonce's 2nd single, Ring the alarm, because Ring the Alarm is getting a lot of airplay, measured in Audience Impression which is counted most in Billboard's Hot 100,and it is also in itunes top 10 consistently, which is counted twice than radio airplay. so tell me about your review!

#15 — September 20, 2006 @ 18:20PM — reggie von woic [URL]

God i hate how she looks now.
oh and about the song...i'm sure its doing swell outside the charts.

#16 — September 22, 2006 @ 02:33AM — danté peterson

christina is a sl*@
now that i have your attention...
Talent seems to be the question around here and christina's got it -- so does beyoncé BUT what matters most is longevity. christina may not be at the top of the charts right 'now' but she sure is NOT at the bottom--in fact, very far from it.
Let's appreciate her more and not take her talents for granted before the era of this pop music will end it's cycle. pop music right now are sounds of justin timberlake, christina, jessica, beyoncé, they're fronting the music industry again for an amazing comeback.
see people... here's how it is -- it's a CYCLE what is considered "pop"ular music. before this, 'pop' music was punk(eg., alexisonfire), before THAT was rap (eminem, nelly, fifty) now it's back to good ol aguilera, timberlake, beyoncé music. What is my point exactly? to enjoy this type of music before pop becomes punk again or even worse rap music!
So wow, if you're still reading all this--you are awesome!
thank you aguilera and everyone else, making us enjoy music and life!
The End

#17 — September 22, 2006 @ 22:20PM — James

Omg, I love Christina so much!!! Every single song on Back to Basics is amazing!!! The very first time i heard "Hurt" I was like on the floor about to just cry my eyes out it was so beautiful. If she does not win a grammy this year, then people don't know what true talent and what music is.

#18 — September 23, 2006 @ 00:50AM — Derek

Christina will take the Grammys by storm next year. And the fact that her album went gold after a couple of weeks is really good. "Hurt" is an amazing song and so are all the other songs on the album.

#19 — September 27, 2006 @ 22:12PM — Kewlguy

OMG so many haters out there...all of you haters are just jealous that you cant sing like Christina. "Hurt" is a great song and I love listening to it. I'm sure she will get a grammy. I'm so proud of how Christina has grown into a true and unique artist. Even though I must admit that I miss her "Stripped" days...I am happy for her. She is finally happy and is with somebody who loves her. I cant wait to see what Christina has in store for all of us!

#20 — September 29, 2006 @ 19:47PM — Eatacookie

Like her voice but don't care too much for the song.

#21 — September 30, 2006 @ 08:30AM — dhenyz

"Hurt" is an amazing and powerful ballad! Her rendition was very soulful and emotional. Christina is indeed an astonishing artist. Her Back to Basics album is astounding as well. While other singers i.e. Justin Timberlake, Beyonce Knowles etc...are concentrating more on RnB, Hip-hop, it's a good thing to know that christina is paying tribute to jazz, soul and blues legends which eventually inspired her to become a singer. It really demonstrates a positive influence to those belonging in the music industry. Furthermore, in this modern times Christina is presenting us with an album that reminds us of how jazz, blues and soul are great and that should not be forgotten. I truly salute her.
It is also devastating to know that those anti-Christina's are trying to pull her down. They often say that she doesn't have the talent which is very pointless. And that her album is boring. I mean what do you call a girl possessing a 4 octave voice? and can sing just any type of songs...maybe in three years we'll hear her doin opera too! Please be illuminated. Always suspend ur judgments first, u need to back it up with facts because facts do not leave a room for unreasonable doubts.
I'm hoping with my earnest desire that Christina will received tons of Grammy's this time because she deserves it...great album, great songs, great voice and great performance...what more can u ask for?

Thank you and God bless!!!

#24 — October 5, 2006 @ 07:36AM — Laura

This is a very powerful song. Christina just continues to get better and better.

#25 — October 6, 2006 @ 10:16AM — Casey

Christ. I see the haters have arrived. *rolls eyes*

Great review, as usual, Chris. I play the song multiple times, and I picked up her album. Damn, she's fabulous. ;)

#26 — October 6, 2006 @ 16:50PM — lisa [URL]

This song is truly outstanding. It is a wicked big big tune. Big up Christina.

#27 — October 16, 2006 @ 16:51PM — Dper06

Don't listen to the haters who actually take time out of there day to sit down and write about how much they dislike christina. Anyone who says christina is "talentless" is obviously jealous that they are not as gifted as her. What losers!

#28 — October 18, 2006 @ 16:48PM — David

I would just like to say something about Christina Aguilera's HURT video. What an incredible song. I see many of you here putting her down. I see many of you here comparing her talent with other talented artists. Beyonce, Timberlake and others are very talented people. Just consider how many people sing out there. This HURT video was especially excellent for me. I had a chance to be on the set for a couple days while they shot it. You see, my daughter played the young Ms. Aguilera. When I saw the video I could not hold back the tears. She looked like an angel and she and Ms. Aguilera had a great time. It was awesome to see how they put this video together. Some say instant classic. I agree. All I can say is that Christina Aguilera is a blessing. My young daughters acting career will certainly be boosted because of her. May God continue to richly bless her, her family, and her future endeavors. David

#29 — October 19, 2006 @ 16:52PM — Jeomy

Christina not only has talent she IS talent!!! being able to use her vocals amazingly at a very early age is by far outstanding for a little girl! she doesn't only sings she masters it! she is the only artist in the last decade that sings, produces, writes, and performes her songs! she is the best! christina not only sings what she writes she writes songs with meaning! she writes about her past, her love, her marriage. most of her songs actually have points to them apposed to most artists these days.(not saying i don't enjoy other artist). but christina is the best thing since sliced bread! i love you! both her stripped and back to basics(which is the best album our society has seen in a LONG time!) she wrote some pretty deep lyrics which maybe not to all but to people who know what talent is and can point it out...that girl has plenty of talent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#30 — October 20, 2006 @ 07:07AM — Abby

I totally agree with you A. L. Harper. Mariah Carey, Paris Hilton and Beyonce are talentless crap and don't get me started on Jennifer Lopez. I used to hate christina and i still think she is a pile of shite but i like some of her new album and Hurt isn't a bad song, I cant stop playing it!

#31 — October 20, 2006 @ 14:17PM — CSG unit [URL]

Hurt is an amazing song filled with emotion and soul. For all the people who say that she dosent have talent, you are obviously jealous because you dont have any real talent. Back to Basics is an album that reminds us that their is some true talent nowadays. However i felt stripped was better. The video is spectacular! and i cannot wait to see her in concert! That women knows how to command a stage.

#32 — October 21, 2006 @ 19:20PM — manda

Christina has talent! and HURT is my favorite song on her album. I almost cried when I first heard it, its that moving...BUT, for an artist like christina who has had great success with albums in the past, to only be gold and to sell very few albums in her first week it was out is a big downfall for her. I'm not saying this album did bad(i think hurt will help it more) but compared to sales of her first 2 this one so far is a flop.

#33 — October 26, 2006 @ 11:31AM — tasha

Who is the actor who playing Christina's father?
Remind me much of Ed Harris, but I doubt.

#34 — October 27, 2006 @ 07:24AM — Mia

Christina Aguilera is an absolute legend. She had a hard childhood yet she didn't let that stop her from fullfilling her dreams. All you haters out there, get over it. If you don't like her then don't comment. 'Hurt' is an amazing song and nobody can deny Christina is one talented girl. I love 'Hurt' I play it over and over again. If i could sing like anyone in the world, i'd want a voice like hers. I love Christina she's such an awesome girl she stands up for what she believes in and isnt intimidated by anybody.

#35 — October 27, 2006 @ 10:57AM — David

The HURT video "DAD" name is Tim and he is from Ireland. The little "Christina" is my daughter "Laci Kay" and is really awesome as you can see. The both hit it off well and Ms Aguilera blessed them both. David

Everybody loves this song, excelent workin!

#37 — November 3, 2006 @ 22:54PM — Jim

Probably the sexiest woman alive right now. What I wouldn't give to hear her sing to me while making sweet love...

#38 — November 5, 2006 @ 14:50PM — Hardy

Song of the Year so far for me. This is just a terrific, moving ballad.

#39 — November 6, 2006 @ 17:30PM — Keri [URL]

The song "hurt" has touched me very much. She has put so much feeling and emotion into this song. In many ways this song has made me think about things in my life and how this song reminds me of it. Its a beautiful song!

#40 — November 13, 2006 @ 19:42PM — ashley

for all those people that say christina aguilera has no talent. i really think she does i would really like to see you guys get up and do what she can i bet more than half of you guys sound like crap not to be mean but she is very talented and don't compare her to people that rap either that is two different genres which should never be compared. shes talented and her new song hurt is awesome i would kill to be in concert for her and that song

#41 — November 21, 2006 @ 11:43AM — Neka

Ok all you haters should stop right there. Who cares about album flops or writting music or not or range. You all know that Christina can sing!! You might not like the way she sings because maybe you are into rock or classical. But theres no way you can sit there and say she just has no talent!! Thats just crazy!!! And ABBY!!! How on EARTH can you put Paris Hilton and Mariah Carey in the same catagory???? Or JLo and Beyonce??? Have you even heard beyonce live? Well I have and I think all you haters should really just do your research before you just say that something sucks!

I am a music lover that means I love all (yes all) types of music, I give all music a chance From Rock to R&B. And another thing, Christina Is not a POP singer she's a SOUL singer!!! Thank You and everyone please just give music a chance, try to listen to another artist cd for a change, you might feel different about your opinion.

Christina has an amazing voice, with perfect pitch, great control, etc etc. I am a singer, musician and have a degree in music. So I can back it up when I say this girl has it going on. She had the courage to reinvent herself, when she was not happy doing the simple music. Good for her, and the song Hurt GREAT Song, I want to learn to play it on the piano and sing it.

#45 — January 18, 2007 @ 14:06PM — Selma [URL]

Hurt is a wonderfully moving song and Christina did a great job interpreting it. I can't help but feel sad for Linda Perry (who wrote it) and the loss of her father. Kudos to both Christina and Linda for their collaboration. This one's a winner.

#47 — January 26, 2007 @ 14:18PM — J [URL]

This song is very touching to the soul. It tells you that someone will always be in your life and sometimes the people that you love the most will be gone without a trace and you have to cherish every moment you have with them for as long as you can.

Some people really need a hug. For some unknown reason some of these bloggers have a large amount of hate within themselves towards a person they do not even know...kinda sad...really sad. Until you people meet her or until you become as famous and talented as she is, I'd stop ranting and raving;) Have a great day

Hurt sounds like a ripoff to me, but I can't place the song that the melody is from.

#52 — March 13, 2007 @ 00:56AM — Iran

I really consider Hurt song as an absolute hit in her career, you can feel the sadness she shows when performing that video, I really love it, her voice, her authentical style, besides, I should have to say that she's behaving like a mature woman and a singer characterised by her voice power, being famous and outstanding by means of her work not triumphing by scandals like Britney Spears. My god, she's also a gorgeous woman, she looks so sensual that I feel excited.

#53 — April 9, 2007 @ 08:56AM — jem

the song reaches out to alot of people and brilliant to sing along to.

christina sucks she tries so hard and still sucks and hurt is a big FLOP christina herself is a flop she should burry her ugly face in mud for releasing such a boring album
the track listing is:
1- welcome to the circus of stupid whore
2-welcome again
3-scooda whoo scooda hey (you wish)
4- the biggest flop
5- I suck at even troubles
6- some cheesy striptease song
7- have mercy on me and compare me to marilyn monroe just once
8- save me from the make up
9- the ugly groom

when i bought this boring thing i really though about suing her for wasting 1 hour of my life

and that's for CD no. 2

about CD no. 1 :D i just can't imagine how she could be so damn stupid to release such a boring-to-death CD OMG it egoistic in a stupid way, in one song she wants to prove to the world that she is Princess Diana and every one is thankful for her being dirrty and that she is the genie in a bottle who changed the world, in another 2 she proves how hateful she is by dissing her "abusive father" (this explains so much!) and some guy named scott who is reponsible for her now-dead success, then she wants to prove to the world that she married Mr. right and that she has a perfect life, then she disses the current STARS and praises the dead and the old coz they can't compete with her
she is pathatic

Pure vocal beauty. As a singer, writer and composer who plays guitar, piano and violin, I feel I am critical. Hurt has made tears come down my face. When you can do that, you have touch people with what comes from your soul.

#62 — December 31, 2007 @ 10:30AM — toney

well i've just read a lot opinions about christina. i just wanna remind you that - whatever you might think - she´s been successful for at least 15 years! and apart from make-up (well, i dont wanna know how much she's already used in her life...must be tons!)which shes definitely using too much and from her desire for looking and acting like marilyn monroe (you have to admit that she knows how to do that! ) she definitely is one of the best singers the world has ever seen..of course, there are many many singers who got a great voice ( like leona lewis, for example..) but almost none of them is as recognizable as christina's. of course, the lady´s got some quirks and of course she's a diva but she has still got fans and these are not sparse..what i want you (the guys who think christina is a wh*re or whatever) to think about is why do you have to expose her in these rude ways if shes simply a better singer, a more beautiful woman, a more successful human being and a more popular girl than you?!
remember this, you dont wanna be closed down like this just because you´re good at something and try to improve yourself...

Lol at Christina fans. There were like maybe at best, THREE people attacking Christina in this whole thread, and in response we get like 18 fanbots raging on about some supposed big plethora of "haters", lmao.

Heres's the deal: If X-Tina detractors weren't allowed to post here, they would have been banished. People are entitled to dislike her, and to publicly voice as much. I think she's totally contrived and unoriginal, with an overrated, ear-sore of a singing voice, who disgraces the name classic Hollywood/40s-50s music culture with her laughable attempts at emulation(the equivalent of a prepubescent schoolgirl dressed in her mother's gowns and make-up). Disagree all you want, it doesn't make you anymore in the 'right'.
