Saxophonist Dewey Redman dies at age 75
Saxophonist Dewey Redman has died at the age of 75 from liver failure. Redman originally sought out trumpet lessons when he was younger but instead started out at age 13 on the clarinet. He also played in his high school marching band. On the saxophone Redman was mostly self-taught. Redman played right up to his death, with his final gig being just a week previously at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in Tompkins Square in Manhattan.
Myspace to start selling songs
Myspace has announced that it will start selling music. The hugely popular site owned by News Corp said that by the end of the year it hopes to offer unsigned bands the opportunity to sell their music through the website. The songs will be sold in a non-copyright protected that can be played on many mp3 players. Bands will choose the price of the songs including the myspace distribution fee.
Rancid singer/guitarist collapses on stage
Lars Frederiksen of Rancid collapsed halfway through a set at a gig in Montreal. He was taken to a nearby hospital. The band has postponed their shows over Labor Day weekend and will continue with their tour starting on September 5th in Pittsburgh. No details of illness that caused the collapse have been released. Dates for the rescheduled shows will be announced soon and all the tickets from the postponed shows will be honored.
