Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin, Dead at 44

Written by Joan Hunt
Published September 04, 2006

Steve Irwin, better known as The Crocodile Hunter, has bound across television screens around the world for the last ten years. His goal: to educate the masses through entertaining presentations about wildlife, habitat, and conservation. He had millions of fans and changed the way wildlife documentaries were made.

No matter what you thought of Irwin, the man I met several years ago was absolutely one of the most genuinely kind and also the most energetic person I've ever met. Yes, I am a fan and so is the rest of my family. Like fans everywhere, the news of Steve's death has hit my family hard.

Steve Irwin was killed after a stingray barb punctured his chest earlier today. According to ABC.net.au, "Steve Irwin and his team had been filming a new documentary, titled Ocean's Deadliest, at Batt Reef off the coast of the resort town of Port Douglas, when the accident occurred." He had been accompanied by his longtime friend and filmmaker John Stainton on this trip. Stainton said on CNN, "A desperate effort was made to save him." However, by the time rescue workers arrived, they pronounced him dead.

A marine science expert from Australia's Sea World, Trevor Long, said Irwin had no chance after taking the barb to the torso. The venom from the type of stingray involved in the incident is a protein-based venom and acts very quickly, stopping cardiac function.

Born in Victoria, Australia on February 22, 1962, Steve Irwin was raised to love and respect wildlife by his parents, Bob and Lyn. He received a python for his sixth birthday and wrangled his first croc at age nine while out with his father. By the late '60s and early '70s, their backyard was no longer large enough to adequately house the animals the Irwins tended. Finding a beautiful piece of land in Beerwah, the family built the Beerwah Reptile Park. Visitors paid 40 cents for adults and 20 cents for children to view the menagerie the Irwins had amassed over the years.

Lyn worked to rehabilitate healthier animals for future release and worked to develop a successful breeding program for the zoo. Bob became a well-known herpetologist, developing innovative conservation techniques and strategies that have been adopted statewide, and federally in Australia. And, there was young Steve, taking it all in.

In his late teens, Steve ventured into the bush to live. Living on his own, foraging food from the land, he gained a new respect for nature. By applying his vast knowledge of wildlife to his everyday encounters with it, he was able to live among the flora and fauna without harm. After nearly two years of life in the bush, Steve returned home to the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park, as the zoo was renamed.

Is this how your network chooses to honor someone's death? I just walked off of watching Matt Lauer's interview of Steve over his 2004 conterversial incident. He already apologized and stated he regretted holding his baby while feeding a croc at a zoo, do you have to rehash it again and again on the weekend he passes? How about honoring him and showing him in his glory instead of defending himself in front of his little girl? Bad choice!!!! Shame on you, I refuse to watch you.

R.I.P Steve irwin Mad Dude But a propaer legend

#10 — September 4, 2006 @ 11:40AM — Jenny

Steve was an awesome guy. I really looked up to him. God bless him and his family, and his friends too. I am so devistated, he had so much energy that i found it hard to believe he could ever die. Steve was like a legend, and legends will never die. He may not be a legend now but later on, as the world discovers more about his death he will be a legend. He did die, but at least he will always stay on this earth in the hearts of those who looked up to him. God Bless Steve Irwin.

"Steve, I know that you can hear me from up there in Heaven, so I just want to say you were an insperation to me always." "I also want to say that, I wish that you could come back to us, to be able to live your place in this world." Steve, one more thing to say is, ill remember you always. ALWAYS. "Steve, im glad that you were able to march with the penguins, swim with the crocs, and fly with the eagles. Ill see you in Heaven, mate. 1962-2006 STEVE IRWIN

#26 — September 4, 2006 @ 22:17PM — STM

All his mad bluster and raw enthusiasm for life wasn't put on for the cameras ... it was all real - or fair-dinkum, to use the Aussie vernacular. He was what we call in Australia a "knock-about bloke" ... someone who had become wealthy and found fame but who hadn't changed one bit.

What a lot of people outside Australia don't know is that he was a very active conservationist and had been involved in a number of charities to save native species here. His most recent TV ads in Australia were an appeal to help orphaned animals (koalas, kangaroos, wombats, etc), particularly those whose mothers had fallen victim to road accidents.

He was also a great fan of the Brisbane Broncos footy team in the Australian National Rugby League - and up-ended Gorden Tallis, one of the world's toughest players, at a training session with a front-on tackle around the legs.

When he was invited to have another go at one of his heroes, gentle giant Shane Webcke, the player (they were friends) decided to give him a little taste of what it's really like and dropped the shoulder into him.

Irwin went flying .... and lay on the ground looking like he'd been run over by an angry rhinoceros. Then he just dusted himself off and got up smiling, all back slapping and high fives.

Wrestling crocs, saving animals or tackling NRL players ... all the same to him. Very sad for Terri and their kids.

A great and much-loved Australian and an all-round decent bloke. And everyone here will really bloody miss him.

#27 — September 4, 2006 @ 22:53PM — Scott Butki

You witness well, Joan

#28 — September 5, 2006 @ 08:14AM — Bliffle

Seems to me Irwin was a nut who harassed animals for a living. Finally, one of them successfully protested the invasion in the only way available.

Looks like modern people are so over-protected and coddled that, starved for real achievement, they must invent vicarious adventure at the same time they seek institutions to secure their own lives. It's a TV nation. Probably a TV world.

#30 — September 5, 2006 @ 10:11AM — Nancy

Shocking and yet all things considered not really surprising, considering how far and how often he pushed the safety envelope. Very sad, and a really awful freak accident, but how long can a person go on daring the odds?

#31 — September 5, 2006 @ 11:58AM — Jim Wynne [URL]

As I point out here, Irwin's death was not a "freak accident." The stingray did it on purpose, and Irwin presumably knew what could happen. "Stupid blunder" is more like it.

#32 — September 5, 2006 @ 12:00PM — Nancy

I used "freak accident" in the sense that an animal normally extremely non-agressive in nature felt it had to protect itself. Kind of like being charged by a dik-dik or attacked by a rabbit. It happens, but it's extremely rare.

It is a sad time to have someone with the energy and love for all of God's creatures leave this world. I pray that his family will find the strength to move on, but to always remember his greatness & love.

May God be with you [and families at this] time of need...."

Im so hurt to hear about such a great mans death. It is so unfortunate to hear someone as passionate for wildlife has past doing what he loved the most. May he rest in Peace. He will forever live in our hearts and memories.

#39 — September 6, 2006 @ 12:56PM — Jeanette Smith

I have watched Steve and Teri for a long time, on the day his beloved Mary died I cried with him, I cried for him when he lost his precious Sui, but on Monday I cried for myself and the entire world because we all lost a very special man. Teri lost her husband and Bindi and Baby Bob lost their father, and this world will never be the same again. Steve was put here to speak for those who could not speak for themselves. I admit I wasn't that into crocodiles and snakes until I saw a crazy man saying how great they were. Now I can't get enough of them, and I have Steve to thank for that. This world needed him and now we all know what it's like to love these wonderful animals. So Thank You Steve, and God speed my friend. You will always be my HERO!

I WAS SO SHOCKED TO HEAR OF STEVE'S UNTIMELY DEATH. SEEMS IT CAN'T BE SO. SOMEONE SO DEDICATED TO LIFE--HE CAN'T BE GONE--HE HAD SO MUCH TO GIVE & SO MUCH ENTHUSIASM--AND SUCH A BRAVE WIFE/FAMILY TO WATCH WHAT HE DOES SO WELL. I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT HIS WIFE, KIDS & FAMILY ARE GOING THROUGH, OR HOW IT WILL BE FOR THEM AS WELL AS THE REST OF THE WORLD WIHOUT HIM. SUCH A LOSS. HE WENT AS HE LIVED. I WONDERED IF HE WAS DISAPPOINTED THAT IT WASN'T A CROC--BUT IT HAD TO BE WILDLIFE AFTER ALL. THE NAUGHTY BLOKE JUST GOT THE BETTER OF HIM THIS TIME. I'LL MISS HIM.

I wanted to thank Joan for her kind words about Steve. I can understand were her son is coming from because my dreams were almost exactally like his. Steve Irwin was my hero. He represented everything I want to be. A environmentalist, a herpetologist and a zoo director. For years my family had tried to raise money to go to Australia and meet him. 2 weeks ago we finally booked the tickets. To meet him would have been the proudest day of my life. I will never get to meet Steve Irwin, but hopefully I could meet his family or his co-workers. I will never will forget Steve Irwin and I hope niether will the world

Steve Erwin was a wonderful person who gave many interesting hours of knowledge to all people about animals. I truly believe that he loved all animals and was born to protect and preserve them. Our heart felt regrets and condolences go our to Terri and pray that her broken heart will mend and know that Steve was doing what he loved most when this terrible incident occurred. God Bless You and our prayers are with you.
Sincerely,

I never really was effected by the death of a celebrity. When I heard the tragic news I was in disbelief. I have been watching Steve since before he and Terri even met. I fell in love with him and his family over the years. I truly believe he did his job to educate the public and any teasing of animals was to show how they react in defense. He and his family taught me so much about animals I initially thought were vicous. I thank him and his family for taking the risks to educate the public. I send my love and condolences to his family.
God now has an angel for the animals in heaven. God bless and my prayers are with Terri and her children and all of Steves family and friends.

ALMOST A WEEK LATER AND I STILL AM HAVING TROUBLE ACCEPTING STEVE IRWINS DEATH. ALTHOUGH I HAVE NEVER MET HIM, I FEEL I HAVE LOST A FRIEND. I AM SURE HE HAD THIS EFFECT ON MANY PEOPLE.

WE WATCHED AS STEVE GOT MARRIED AND SAW THE BIRTH OF BINDI AND BOB. WE MOURNED WITH HIM WHEN HIS "MUM" DIED.

AN EMOTIONAL MAN AND A RISK TAKER. HE SAID HE WOULD GIVE HIS LIFE FOR HIS WORK. THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED.

HE RISKED HIS LIFE TO EDUCATE US, HE GOT OUR ATTENTION, WE LISTENED.

WE WILL MISS YOU STEVE. BLESS YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

I HOPE, IN A FEW YEARS, YOUR CHILDREN WILL CARRY ON WITH YOUR WORK, SO YOU MAY CONTINUE YOUR DREAM THROUGH THEM.

The untimely passing of Steve Irwin is a great tragedy. This has effected my family more than I could have imagined; he has been a great influence on myself and my two boys. The world will never be the same. In the past, I have dealt with this type of emotional pain through music. Being a song writer and composer, I have written musical compositions and songs to honour friends, family, and fallen heroes to ease the pain and commemorate the contributions they've made in life. Steve falls under the obvious catagory of "HERO." Please accept and share with the world this musical tribute in honour of the great "CROCODILE HUNTER" Steve Irwin.. WE LOVE YOU STEVE!!!!

Sincerely:
David James

I still am in a state of shock myself, I only watched the show,a few times in the past my two brothers actually love the Crocidile Hunter; However like many people said I being A believer in The Lord "How" could this have Happened,I don't Know? if Steve Believed in Jesus-Christ? that is not everyone's believe.Nevertheless you could see that Steve Had such A "Authentic" Spirit that captivated People; He was real.I really Feel Bad for his wife we don't know what tomorrow will bring However She should be consoled Knowing she had a wonderful well rounded husband that loved his Life and truley cared for God's Creatures,Why? was he taking so early knowing He had a great partner Terri And two beautiful children bindi and bob'only God knows What a terrible mistery. My Daughter And I will continue to watch the Show Her Name is Temple She has them Chinky eye's, Like bindi Steve Irwins Daughter. My daughter Will be three october the 19th,I tryed to explain to her what happened to Steve,Then A few days later she said mommy all enthusatic I want to watch Steve Irwin And What struck me the most by her comment is she placed her hand on her chest and Instead of saying he Got piered in the heart".She said mommy "Steve Irwin Has a heart".I come to realize His Heart was so Full of Life For wildlife and his family He was piere in that very spot.Like Jesus was the lamb for Slauder for God.May Steve's Legacy never be forgotten May we preserve and Respect his mission.I also want us to keep his widow and children in our prayers;Whatever your believe is.I Hope I did Not sound Redundant,I wish that never Happened I Personaly am Afraid of stingrays; While on a trip in the caymen Island, A few years back we a Few Friends went on a boat ride and the Men on the boat said they Were professionals at working with stingrays: that was my first time seeing those mammels in person sorry to say this I did not like those Tails.God only know's when they said to pet them they are harmless I did and jumped back on the boat;My friend filmed them above water in the shallow part of the ocean while tourist from other boat's on the trip fed them.I wish Steve Was not as free spirited to trust every animal,I wished that he had stayed above ground so If something did occurr the chances of a fatility would of been slim.Like all the personal and spotters he had around for the most part transfering Crocidiles to new homes and all the other animals he had in his zoo.I hope I made sense I don't have a computer at home and I am at School in another town I have to get Home, to get my daughter off the bus see ya later.God Bless you All.

Hi Everyone my name is Suzie and I want to tell you about a great competition I have entered. Bindi Irwin is turning 10 WooHoo, I have entered the video competition in it I am driving lol.

Australia Zoo is the best Zoo in the World, Bob irwin and his wife started off with a reptile park and Steve & Terri Irwin turned it into Australia zoo. It is Located In Beerwah Queensland which if a GREAT town all the people are sooooooooooooo friendly. I am going to work at the Zoo when I am older and live in Beerwah. Please vote for me so I can go to Bindi's Birthday, It would mean the world to me.Steve was and Still is a hero to me
