Interview: Jacob Marshall of Mae

I read in an article that the band had very low expectations starting out and didn’t think the gig would last very long. Was that really true?
Jacob: We always had strong faith in each other and in the band from day one. However, if you start to have expectations of how things should or could go, you will often be disappointed. Subconsciously, we tried to keep our emotions in check. When we started, we had no idea what to expect. If we had, we may not have done it (laughs). It’s a very intense ride, but music is the love of our lives. It is an honor to be doing this, and we wouldn’t trade it in for the world.
The band’s appreciation is very transparent in each member’s blog postings.
Jacob: We come from a very small town in Virginia. Music has allowed us the incredible opportunity to see the world, which really changes your perspective. Our fans have allowed us to see the world, and we cannot say thanks enough.
After reading fan comments on the members’ blogs, the fans appear to be very intelligent and actually have something to say. Usually on a typical band’s blog, you’ll see comments like ‘Joe is so hot,’ or ‘you guys rock, please come to my town.’ Often, this isn’t the case with your fans.
Jacob: Fortunately, we have fans that are listening to the lyrics and exploring the music, the textures, the arrangements, the lyrics, and tying it all together.
Zach had a very interesting post on his blog about the state of the music industry. I’m paraphrasing here, but he wrote that the industry has significantly fixated its attention on finding the hot song of the moment.
Jacob: The business model of music has changed. Until recently, the industry has not allowed a band, after a record or two that are unsuccessful, to continue to grow. There isn’t artistic development. There are several indie labels like Tooth & Nail [Records] that are putting out records for young bands that have potential but are not quite radio ready. If we would have had instant success, we would not have been ready for it. The band probably would not have sustained over the years. Our first two records set the foundation for the band. We are just trying to continue to build the next chapter.
Will Mae continue the relationship with Tooth & Nail Records on the upcoming album?
Jacob: We have recently signed with Capitol Records, part of the EMI family. It was a huge opportunity for us. Our relationship with Tooth & Nail has been amazing, a great relationship. We will continue to have a relationship with Tooth & Nail. Together with Capitol records, both companies will help with the new album.
