With No Better Defense, OSU Ex-Star Maurice Clarett Tries To Become The Next Rodney King
Published August 15, 2006
Maurice Clarett used to be worshipped as a sports god here in Columbus... even by me. Now he’s more of an embarrassment to us rabid Ohio State fans, most of whom would rather just see him disappear and be forgotten. Either that, or watch him move to somewhere in Michigan.
Clarett led Columbus police on a chase after he was spotted near the homes of witnesses that would have testified against him on Monday as he stands trial for an armed robbery charge (he was out on bail). So determined was he to escape capture, it was necessary for the police to use spike sticks to get him stopped. He was hard to subdue with a taser because he was wearing a bulletproof vest. In his vehicle were three handguns, an axe, and an assault rifle.
Clarett’s attorney Michael Hoague is now claiming that he was viciously beaten and maced after he was placed in handcuffs early last Wednesday. Since the police van that responded to his most recent arrest wasn’t equipped with a camera, it’s my opinion that Clarett seized the opportunity to make unsubstantiated claims in order to garner sympathy and protests from the local black community. Either that or he’s trying to emphasize his alleged mental instability in order to get out of charges stemming from a botched armed robbery attempt this past New Year’s Eve.
Clarett had been drinking as evidenced by a bottle of Grey Goose vodka found on the front seat of his car.
So far the only footage available of the arrest was grainy security tape from a restaurant surveillance camera and so that means it’s Clarett’s word against the police officers.
The sad part is how bright a future this man had.
In my opinion...

The man was arrested with assault rifles pistols an axe wearing a bullet proof vest for heaven's sake of course he was in his right mind, just aske the NRA!!!
This confirms my speculation that Jim Brown is still mentoring him.
Matt I well and truly believe that this man is just a street punk that got lucky and that this is his real self.
Everything from trying to get around the draft rules to trying to use his celebrity to get out of trouble.
I truly believe he was out to harm or harrass the people that were going to testify against him.
We in Columbus have suspected this for some time, and his stupid attempted robbery in the brewery district in front of people who knew and could identify him only proves it.
He thought he could get away with it because he's a big star in Columbus.
I hope the put him away a lonnnnnnnnng time.

"This confirms my speculation that Jim Brown is still mentoring him."
Timidly typed prior to big #32 squishing the antagonist's head, the way the rest of us would pinch a zit on our ass until it popped...
MCH-we're going to have to have a talk about those fantasies of yours... This has been a recorded announcement...
Matt-PLEASE-that's information even I don't want to know...
RJ and so because he believes he can use the race card as an excuse-that gives him a free ride?
Just if he was some professional ball player with a fat contract. He really be a jackass to handle.
The situation was that he went pro too soon without enough seasoning. He should've stayed with Ohio State for at least another year, gone pro. As it was he came back home to find his bridges burned behind him.
Not being smart enough to figure that out, he tried using his "hero" status to his advantage and when that didn't work we went back to his old ways of crime.
Oh how the mighty have fallen.
Sounds like his life after O-H was just completely selfish.
Not to say the one during OSU was comparable to Mother Teresa.
Matt according to yesterday's local news, he's been denyed visitors except his lawyers because he's been attempting to give a jailhouse interview to GQ magazine!
Talk about wandering off from reality!
Until I figure out the latin, I'll just say
Oh how the mighty have fallen.

I believe that in the coming days his behavior will get more and more bizzare as he tries to become "the man who beat an armed robbery charge by pleading insanity"
RJ correction "It am be racism"
Why should anyone care about this low life piece of shit...
Please be assured that your valued contribution to this conversation is appreciated... this has been a recorded announcement...
This is a classic defense tactic...sort of like these two pillars of the Democratic Party
1. Mckinney- "They did it to me because Im black"
2. Jim McGreevy, former NJ Governor -"I am a gay American" as he resigned in disgrace for hiring his "Israeli Poet Lover" as the director of NJ Homeland security...
And just like these two Maurice Clarett will go on to be famous and some sort of hero probably write a book and be on Dancing with the Stars!
You're wrong, somehow I don't think Clarett will be anything but a jailbird for a long while
How can one person house so much hate within themselves?
"RJ and so because he believes he can use the race card as an excuse-that gives him a free ride?"
Depends on the composition of the jury...
See: OJ...

Yeah, right...and the millions he spent on his defense had no impact on the verdict whatsoever.
See: Rush Limbaugh...
MCH-moot point-I expect a change of venue very shortly.
Former Ohio State football star Maurice Clarett agreed in court to plead guilty to aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon in a deal that will send him to prison for at least 3 1/2 years to end two criminal cases against him.
Sources tell The Columbus Dispatch and other local media that Franklin County Common Pleas Judge David Fais will sentence Clarett to 7 1/2 years in prison with an opportunity for early release.
Clarett's deal with prosecutors in Columbus, Ohio, was cut today as jury selection was set to begin in his trial on charges of pulling a gun on two people behind a local bar early on New Year's Day and taking a cell phone from one of them.
Today's plea also covers a case arising out of a police chase last month that ended with officers finding four loaded weapons in his vehicle.

Maurice Clarett was called back into court today so the judge could make sure he understood all his rights.
The appearance also gave the former Ohio State football star an opportunity to issue a longer apology to the community and his fans.
The court session didn't change anything in Clarett's 7 1/2-year sentence, but it gave Franklin County Judge David W. Fais a chance to clarify Clarett's appellate and constitutional rights in the plea he entered on Monday.
Clarett pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated robbery and one count of carrying a concealed weapon and will spend at least 3 ½ years in prison before he can apply for judicial release.
Fais said he forgot to clarify Clarett's rights and forgot to give him credit for 44 days served in jail. The plea re-do was necessary to prevent any chance of an appeal.
Fais gave Clarett some advice, sayinfg "I didn't say this Monday, but I hope you take this time to do something positive. Your athletic skills are well known but you have some potential that goes far beyond your athletic skills. I hope you expand your abilities so you can become an active, productive citizen. I wish you luck.''
The appearance also gave Clarett's lawyers a chance to read some of their client's apology into the record, something not part of the original plea. One of Clarett's lawyers, Michael C. Hoague, read it into the record.
This is the statement he read:
"I want to express my sincere apology to Mr. Nyarko and Ms. Douglas for my inexcusable behavior on New Year's Day. I can assure them that I never intended to cause them harm in any way. What I did was wrong and I accept my punishment.
"I also apologize to the prosecutor and the court for my crimes.
"I deeply regret what I did and accept full responsibility for my actions.
"I also want to apologize to my family, this community, my former teammates, coaches and everyone who I let down including my former fans and everyone I disappointed by my behavior.
"I look forward to putting this matter behind me and to showing the court and the community that I have learned from this terrible mistake and will strive to lead a law-abiding and productive life from here on out. I hope one day you will all find forgiveness in your heart for what I've done."
Clarett admitted he took a cell phone from Lucas Nyarko and tried to rob Tywona Douglas outside the former Opium Lounge early on Jan. 1 in an alley. He held a gun in his waistband, but never pulled it on them, prosecutors said. He was charged the next day and turned himself in on Jan. 3. While free on bond, Clarett led police on a brief pursuit on the Far East Side when they tried to pull over his uncle's sport utility for erratic driving on Aug. 9. Police found four loaded weapons inside, including an assault rifle.
A trial on all 12 charges was set to begin Monday when prosecutors offered Clarett one more chance to plead. He will serve three years in prison first for using a gun in a crime and then at least six months for the robbery before he can apply for judicial release, Fais reminded Clarett. If approved, Clarett would be released to a local community-based correctional facility.
