DVD Review: Gorgo: The Destruction Edition
Published July 25, 2006
For the first time, Gorgo is given a full 5.1 surround sound mix. Sadly, it's cheaply constructed. Sound effects are randomly added (like birds chirping, buildings crumbling), and most of them are of a higher quality than the film's original mix. It's also set extremely low, and you'll need to turn the volume far higher than your usual settings to even have a chance at hearing the dialogue. While scratchy and not the height of technology, the standard 2.0 mono track is the way to go.
Some of the extras have been carried over from VCI's first release, including a detailed 10-minute look at the making of the film. While no backstage footage exists, this quietly narrated piece is detailed enough to provide trivia and statistics as to the film's box office.
The photo gallery is completely new, though instead of keeping them as still shots, they're actually video. The pictures scale and zoom out of the screen and include posters and promotional shots. It's hard to get a decent look at any of them. Numerous trailers and cast bios finish off the extras set.
On a final note, it's nice to see VCI re-do the menus. When the disc finally loads up, a CGI Gorgo walks across the screen destroying everything. It's a nice touch.
Instead of killing the creatures off, Lourie decided to let the beasts live. It's an obvious change from nearly every other giant monster movie ever made. It came at the request of his younger daughter after she cried at the end of his previous two giant monster epics, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and the lesser Giant Behemoth.
