DVD Review: The Matador
Published July 25, 2006
With bright colors, The Matador holds itself together on DVD. Compression is subdued the best it can be, providing a sharp, clear, and clean picture. Contrast is occasionally set too high, though it's generally brief and acceptable. Detail is superb during close-ups. ![]()
Audio comes in frustrating, set low on dialogue and then blasting the speakers when there's a brief moment of action. A car explosion early on is enough to knock things off the wall if you've set up to your usual volume to hear the dialogue. There are few instances of rear speaker work, and even fewer that would actually benefit from it. ![]()
Extras are confined almost completely to the commentaries and deleted scenes. There are two choices to choose from in the commentary section, one with the director alone, the other again with director Richard Shepard and his stars, Brosnan and Kinnear. This is followed by 11 deleted scenes, all with optional commentary. Most of these cuts are small trims.
A standard "making of" piece runs for around seven minutes, providing a small glimpse into the film. There are also two radio shows (audio only) discussing the film. A few trailers round things off. ![]()
To its fans, The Matador will be one of the funniest movies they've ever seen. To anyone else, it's a dull, mildly amusing film that draws most of the comedy from the scenario and a great Brosnan performance, not the writing. It's a worth a go if you like interesting and unique filmmaking.
