The Ramble: Tiger, Tour de France, Ricky Williams, A-Rod, A Bad Wang, And Of Course, Barry Bonds

Part of The Ramble

So much to talk about and so little time. I’ll do my best to be brief.

Bad Wang. The owner of the Islanders has really topped himself. In a league where ineptitude and embarrassing behavior is commonplace, Charles Wang really set up himself as the paragon of buffoonery. Out as general manager is Stanley Cup-winning Neil Smith. Replacing him is just-retired backup goalie Garth Snow, a guy whose hockey front office experience is limited to being a goalie. Isn’t it amazing how on one hand some guys can be brilliant enough to amass an amazing fortune, and on the other hand be fatally clueless?

Tiger Woods. He defended his British Open Championship. That’s all I have to say, but it’s enough to get Woods’ name in the headline.

Golf On The Radio. Yes you read that right, golf on the radio. Thanks to XM Radio I listened to the British Open broadcasted by three engaging English blokes via an outlet called Open Golf Radio. What a welcome change from the hushed and reverential tones that are over used by American television golf announcers. These three Open Golf Radio guys made for the most enjoyable sports-on-the-radio listen that I have had. From discussing the color of Sergio Garcia’s outfit – canary yellow or squeezed lemon? – to talking about the nuances of Tiger’s golf swing, you felt like you were listening to three guys watching the tourney on the telly at the local pub. And even though Woods won, you didn’t get the impression that he was the only guy playing in the Open.

The New York Post Follows My Lead Again. Last Monday I posted a story about Dr. James Shortt, the doctor who conspired to prescribe steroids and growth hormone to members of the Carolina Panthers, and asked how is it that the Panthers involved with this doctor have not been punished by the NFL. Just yesterday the Post finally heard about this story and had one of their columnists write something about the same thing. Keep up the good work fellas!

The Tour de France. American Floyd Landis pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in sports history as he came back from losing badly in one of the final stages, to win the Tour de. Unfortunately, Landis’ win was overshadowed by the Woods win and almost every other bit of sports news this weekend. Hopefully history will be kinder to Landis than the present.

Ricky Williams. The exiled Dolphin broke his arm this weekend in the midst of another of his uninspired, under whelming performances in the Canadian Football League. This isn’t the only test that Ricky has recently failed. Bust thy name is Williams.

Barry Bonds. Despite getting hit on his left knee with a pitch, Bonds says that his right knee feels better since he’s not lifting heavy weights anymore, and that he’s sore just because he’s 42 years old. He said all of this with a straight face. And if you check out this story, you'll see that an Associated Press reporter actually wrote that Bonds turned the extra weight that he was carrying around his middle into muscle.  Apparently this person wrote that with a straight face, as well.

"These two guys just happened to be looking out the window at 6:30 in the morning"

So they were up early...or late...so what?

"noticed this suspicious car and brought a pistol with them to see who it could have been"

Because it was on his property, and the 2nd Amendment allows for armed self-defense...

"Why not just call the police and report the suspicious car?"

Maybe because the police, if called, probably wouldn't arrive for another 25 minutes, which may have been too late...

ummm...ok sure...yea that's it...these two guys were sitting around at daybreak, saw this "suspicious car" and said to each other, "hey dawg, let's go exercise our second amendment right for armed self-defense even though we aren't defending ourselves."

and "too late" for what? if the car was parked what was the urgency?

Shame on you Sal...rooting for the Eagles? Well...I never!

As far as E-rod goes...I haven't liked the guy since he tried to knock the ball out of Arroyos
hand in that play-off game a few years back...I even wrote something in my blog back then saying essentially...what i had heard from a Sox fan...Jeta' wouldn'ta done that! I heard on the tube the other day that he leads the league in game winning RBI...what I want ot know is where he stands in the league with runners left in scoring position...he seems to hit the long ball when the Yanks are leading 10-1 and not when they really need it...but living in VA...I don't get that Yankee channel that my folks get in Jersey...so I don't see all the games.

As far as Tiger and the Open...I thought it was a lot more fun to watch the Open as opposed to the US open...the Open seems to give golfers more than one choice as to what type of shot to hit...the US open seems to be all about hitting it long and to a green with the landing size of a pea...the Open seems more about playing golf the way most people actually play golf...us weekend hackers end up in the rough more often than not...and it's about the next shot...in a US major...if you're in the rough you almost have to take an unplayable lie...and that's just wrong...

There's very little chance A-Rod will finish his career in New York, but wherever he goes after that he will have a much better experience than his time with the Yankees.

I heard one of those two guys on PTI sya the other day that every team E-rod leaves gets better when he does...

#6 — July 26, 2006 @ 08:03AM — sal m

there's a few problems with moving ARod. first he has a no trade clause in his contract and second there are only a hand full of teams that would pay him...and the red sox won't, so that leaves the dodgers and the mets and maybe a few others.

when he gets hot and carries the yankees for a while everyone will be cheering him again.

#7 — July 26, 2006 @ 09:24AM — Andy Marsh [URL]

Never happen...I didn't like him when he was the MVP! It's also my understanding that $10 mil a year of his contract is actually paid by the Rangers!

And you should still be ashamed of yourself for rooting for the Eagles...

i was glad that the eagles handled the TO situation the way that they did, and i respected them for not giving in to that brat...however, they made a mistake in bringing him aboard that set back the franchise a good 10 years.

#9 — July 26, 2006 @ 11:48AM — Matthew T. Sussman [URL]

Actually TO set the Eagles back 24 years, the last time they made the Super Bowl.

#10 — July 26, 2006 @ 11:58AM — sal m

One of the great fallacies associated with TO's time with the eagles is that he got them to the superbowl.

the eagles got to the superbowl without TO's help as he was injured at the end of the regular season game and didn't play in the playoffs...the eagles had won the NFC championship game without him and lost the super bowl with him.

#11 — July 26, 2006 @ 13:16PM — Matthew T. Sussman [URL]

Point taken, but he didn't not help them to the Super Bowl.

#12 — July 26, 2006 @ 21:13PM — Andy Marsh [URL]

I do have to agree with you sal on liking the way the Eagles handled the situation...I'm just waiting to see how the Tuna handles TO...

#13 — July 26, 2006 @ 21:55PM — sal m

i've heard others say it, but i agree that the first time bledsoe throws an interception while going to a receiver other than Owens, or the first time he misses a wide open Owens, there will be an incident.
