DVD Review: New Police Story

New Police Story, no relation to the previous films in series, is an odd one for Jackie Chan. Usually up for slapstick and comedy, this latest Police Story is a film surrounded by death. There's still plenty of time for action and trademark fights, but the storyline lifts this above the expectation.

Chan opens himself up emotionally as a ruthless street gang takes out his entire squad. Ripping its storyline from the headlines, the gang is a group of cop killers who think what they're doing is all a game, and go on to create an internet game around the murders. The killings is harsh, and Chan's emotional breakdown is pulled off perfectly.

Stuck inside an alcohol bottle, fans get to see a little drunken boxing action return to the actor's repertiore. It's the closest the fights come to comedy. There are only a few brawls involving Chan himself, and only one that actually gets the typical amount of screen time. That's a spectacular struggle inside a (ad placement) Lego store.

That sets the stage for a few other incredible action spots, including a wild out of control bus segment that goes through an entire shopping district ("goes through" being the important terms). Over 50 years old, Chan still pulls off his own stunts, and it's an obvious difference from so many American films.

Even with the action, the story is never dull or forced. It gives stronger emotion to the fighting, while properly developing the characters instead of tossing them out there to be "generic cop." The story is told in flashback, the returning to present day. While not complicated, it at least adds an extra layer and keeps it from becoming too straightforward.

Director Benny Chan throws in his own touches, including some unique and daring shots to keep things fresh. His pacing is superb, finding the right mix of story to go along with the action. It's not Chan's best, but it's still entertaining in all the ways his films should be.

Well DOne,..Bravo this is the first review I have seen which puts my feelings, after watching the movie, into words. I have been a CHan fan for years and waited to see Jackie spread his acting wings and this movie did it. I found it to be honest and wonderful acting by all involved.
The Happy Birthday song broke my heart. I plan to email this review to my chan groups to read I hope you do not mind.
As you mentioned the climax of the movie is so heart rending I found myself forgiving of the leader of the gang who did all the killing. Well done, very well done, Debi Younce, Bellaire Michigan
