TV Review: Rock Star: Supernova - Week Three

Written by Jewels Richardson

The third week of Rock Star: Supernova, finds Magni, the Iceman, steaming up the stage with "Plush" by Stone Temple Pilots, scorching and scoring the Wednesday night encore performance. Toby train-wrecked to drop his rankings down, and Supernova’s Tommy Lee largely enjoyed Storm. Newsted joined the band to play electric bass behind Phil Ritchie who stepped it up, and Gilby Clark delivered harsher critiques. Edgy rocker, Dilana showed her softer philosophical side, lending her experience and rocker advice to Dana Andrews. Ryan Star expressed embarrassment over ‘pop’ music surfacing from a fellow contestant, but finally he cracked a smile, and Zayra avoided the hurt of the bottom three this week.

Not true for Jenny Galt, Josh Logan and Dana Andrews. Wednesday night Dana came out with Sass Jordon’s, "High Road Easy" and easily saved her seat, Josh performed Nirvana’s "Heart Shaped Box" and Jenny tried to hold on with "Vaseline" by STP but proved Supernova had slipped from her grasp. Her departing comments, "the best slap in the face I ever had".

In my order of preference:

Lukas Rossi
Lukas is still my guy on top. His hair-raising, energetic, Mick Jagger meets Iggy Pop performance of the Rolling Stones song, “Let’s Spend the Night Together” almost stood my hair on end. He strutted out in a black and white suit, his hair worked into an extreme, for lack of a better descriptor, skunk-do, and blazed the stage. He was a whirling dervish of singing energy. Supernova were blown away, with Navarro complimenting Lukas’ arrogance factor. Rawk on dude.

Dilana
Dilana played the Bride of Darkness performing the Cranberries, “Zombie”. Supernova’s comments on her dark and dangerous, over the top performance; Tommy Lee, “I wanna.”, (Ok, he did seem in that ‘mood’ Tuesday night), Gilby, “Enjoy the moment”, Newsted gave her a standing O, and Navarro, commented on how he waits every week for “That” performance that delivers chills, is memorable, stands above the rest, and she delivered it. Dilana was at her dark rocker best.

Magni
The Iceman heated up the competition this week, delivering “Plush” by STP. The man has a big voice, he’s powerfully built, and he delivered a powerful performance. Maybe it was the big sunglasses but “Bono” sprang to mind. A great, solid rocking performance which scored for him the coveted encore spot in the Wednesday night elimination show. Tommy Lee was inspired to actually delivered a clever comment, “Magni-ficent” — I was impressed. Gilby had said he had been experiencing some doubts about Magni, as did I initially, but commended Magni for “killing it”. Rocker guys just love the phrases “Killing it” and “Crunch it”. So rawking forceful.

Jill Gioia
She was indeed, “Allright Now” in her performance of the Free song. I liked her vocals, I liked her delivery, I liked the band interaction. She’s a tiny ball of fire, and she set Supernova afire. Gilby’s remark following her performance, “This is the first time I could imagine us playing behind you”, high praise considering last week’s show of no Love for her screaming and no singing rendition of “Violet”. Tommy Lee mustered a giddy, “I’m alright now!” following their becoming customary sing-song exchanges of “Jillie” and

I think this is going to come down to Dilana and Lukas. They're just miles ahead of the competition. They own the stage, the crowd and Supernova. They have that special "it" factor needed to play with Supernova, they aren't intimidated by them, by what they've accomplished or by their notoriety. Every song they've performed has been their own.
I don't understand what they see in Magni? He's not clicking for me. He's okay, but I think he lacks the stage presence/charisma that Lukas and Dilana have.

Rob, I felt the same way about him until this week; he improved. I too think its a Lukas/Dilana show at this point.

Sam - you made me laugh; I've already seen her naked past, thank you, that's funny.
Cheers.

Magni has great vocals. Nust needs help in stage pressance. Dilana impresses my but has no range with her vocals. Storm kicks azz.But. Jill couldn't be the next white tina turner. Lukas thou he has stage presance doesn't have a voice. Just my opinion. I would love to be able to get the redition of pinball wixard by Storm and the rendition of rings of fire by Delina

Zayra needs to go. She is really starting to bore me.

The final 3 will (hopefully) be Toby, Dilana & Lukas.

I think that Magni has the best voice out of all of them, but he still needs to step up his stage performace. Toby seems pretty average to me, I would like to see him do a really hardcore song just to see how he does. I think the same about Magni too.
