PS2 Review: The Bible Game (EU)

To the extent of my knowledge, an Atheist has never given a review on such a heavily religious product, as I am about to give. This product is also the first ever religious trivia game for the PS2, so this review needs a little personal back-story about the reviewer to make sure you know I am unbiased.

Before I decided that I didn't believe in God in any name that people from other religions called him, I did my research. I studied religion and came to my own personal conclusions based on the texts that I read.

You want to know what I believe? I believe that many years ago, there was a very clever writer, who penned a novel called The Bible.

Bible Game Box ArtSimilar to the way J.R.R. Tolkein wrote The Lord of The Rings, the novelist who wrote The Bible created a beautiful living breathing world with his writing technique. He put so much detail into his characters you could imagine them living and breathing throughout the story the novelist created some 2000 years ago.

The story had it all — life, love, compassion, sin, death and punishment... A truly great novel. But I believe that these writings were not based on real events, but in the heady realm of fiction. It was a great story, but that's all The Bible was in my own personal opinion. Somehow the book has been misinterpreted through the years and has been taken as gospel — Literally!

It makes me wonder if some day down the line, two or three thousand years from now, if people will think that Darth Vader is the devil and Luke Skywalker was a saviour, or perhaps Frodo Baggins will become a saint, trying to rid the world of the evil Saruman who controls the devilish plains of Mordor.

Both of those stories have huge followings now, and both are very intricate stories. You never know, one day these will become new religions; much akin to the way I believe Christianity came into being.

With this in mind, I can still view the game with an unbiased view. I'm looking at this in the same way I'd look at the Friends quiz show — as a quiz about a story. Therefore my own personal beliefs will not come into play in my review, and I will endeavour to fairly judge this game on it's own merits.

I'm sorry, but I tend to agree with Penn Jillette's overall review of The Bible:

"It sure isn't great literature. If it were published as fiction, no reviewer would giving it a passing grade. There are some vivid scenes and some quotable phrases, but there's no plot, no structure, there's a tremendous amount of filler and the characters are painfully one-dimensional."

Akira, You forget though, The Bible was written some 2000 years ago, and literature has come leaps and bounds since those times. By today's standards The Bible is obviously flawed, but back then it was one of the finest pieces of literature ever written. I should have added "for the time" at the end of the sentence about The Bible, but as I merely printed that paragraph to explain that even though I am Atheist I was able to get onto a train of thought with this title that was fair and unbiased, I don't think it's necessary to edit that line into it.

At first I was thinking of leaving my opinion on Christianity out of the final review, but I feel that the extra paragraph added my personal perspective coming into this review and gives readers a better explaination of how I came to my conclusions on the title.

Don't forget, I wasn't reviewing The Bible itself or writing an article about the complex topic of Religion when I was writing up the review for this game. I was merely taking the title for what it was - a Quiz Show style game with questions about a book - The Bible, and how I interpreted the book that the game based it's questions on.

As far as the personal comment, just look at this world. There is a very delicate balance that allows us as human the chance to live on this earth. Tweak this and it's to hot, tweak that and not enough air to breathe, etc. From that perspective their was obviously a greater force that created this earth. The choice you have from that point is rather that creating force is hands off or hands on with its creation. If you were to truly study this area with an open mind, I think you would find that there is an hands on creator. The Bible is part of His work.

As for as the game, I get a disk read error when trying to play the game.

I have not played the game, although, I have read The Bible and it is filled with undeniable facts. It was written 2,000-3,000 years ago yet it is filled with all the scientific facts, facts scientist did not believe then. Facts such as: the earth being a sphere! Incalculable number of stars! Free float of earth in space! Creation made of invincible elements! Each star is different! Light movement! Air having weight! Winds blowing in cyclones! Ocean floor containing Valleys Mountains and springs! Upon researching all these facts I have concluded that The Bible is of supernatural origin. Therefore take heed to its promise of heaven. Let's see if you qualify to enter heaven: have you ever lied (even once-fibs, white lies)? Have you ever stolen (value is irrelevant)? Jesus said, "Whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her, has committed adultery already with her in his heart." Have you ever looked with lust? if you have said yes to these, by your own admission you are a liar, a thieve and an adulterer at heart; you see God has "written His law in you heart", "given light to every man" this is called your conscience (con meaning with, science meaning knowledge) so having knowledge of right and wrong you choose to do wrong anyways. Webster's dictionary says that for a person to be good they have to be "morally perfect". Only God is good, and being the good judge that He is He cannot turn a blind eye to what you have done; He has to be Just. The bible declares, "The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus" so all that you have earned is a paycheck of death but God can give you something that you haven't earned...eternal life. Can a leopard change his spots? Neither can you behavior modify yourself to be a good person, because, "the pig always returns to wallow in the mud and the dog always returns to his vomit". You see, "the things you know you ought to do you don't do and the things you ought not to do you do". there was only one way "that one should die for all" Christ took your punishment of death along with the sinful nature (human nature) that enslaves you to sin; He nailed both on the cross and after 3 days rose from the grave defeating death (everyone's bones still lie in their tombs but His tomb is empty, because, "He has risen"). Romans 10:9, 10 says, "That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." Confess all you're adulteries of the heart and repent for today is the day of salvation tomorrow is not promised. It is not a mental ascent but truly believing to the point of death. Remember you're life is but a vapor in the wind and what will you say to Him then?
