DVD Review: The Warriors Ultimate Director's Cut
Published June 29, 2006
With full 5.1 available for the first time, The Warriors has limited audio issues. There's the unavoidable hiss to the dialogue that's to be expected given the age. The alternate 2.0 mix has the same issue. There's some excellent, albeit subtle, uses of the rear speakers. Echoes, trains, and ambient sounds make their way into the rear channels. The slightly lower quality dialogue is barely noticeable when you're watching the film. ![]()
Four separate features are included, running about 15-minutes each. They probably could have been put together for one long feature. They cover various portions of the film, and end up with the film's pop culture impact. Director Walter Hill also introduces the film, explaining his dislike for special editions and director's cuts. His explanation for doing this to his own film is excellent. There are also a ridiculous amount of trailers that play before the discs main menu loads up. ![]()
The original release on DVD was barren. The transfer was murky, bland, and lacking the striking color and contrast of this update. There were no extras either, so fans of the movie can either live with the brief comic book transitions or hang on to both copies.

The reason that there are featurettes rather than one long doco is probably that the studio can get away with calling the featurettes promotional material, which means they don't have to pay the interviewees as much as for a full-length doco.
This is actually one of my favourite movies, and in my opinion it's IMPROVED with age. Not to mention that Can You Dig It? line quoted above, so memorably samples (along with the DJ's "Okay, let's get down to it boppers!") in Pop Will Eat Itself's song called, erm, Can U Dig It?

Isn't this the one with the famous "Can you dig it!?" line?
