Interview with Sarah Barrable-Tishaeuer (Liberty on Degrassi)
Published June 23, 2006
Sarah Barrable-Tishauer is a teenaged, Canadian actress. Sarah started her career by playing Young Nala when Lion King was on Broadway. More recently, Sarah landed the role of Liberty on Degrassi, a show that has won awards such as the Television Critics Association Award and a Teen Choice Summer Series Award. Degrassi is known as a show that tackles issues that most shows are afraid to tackle. Liberty is one of the characters that has been on since the first season. And, like many of the characters, Liberty has evolved throughout the show. In Season 1, Liberty was just the teacher's pet. In recent years, the school's smartest girl had a secret of her own. The student council president was pregnant! In the U.S., Degrassi just finished airing its fifth season. The sixth season airs in October and is apparently "the most provocative and intense school year ever." In this interview, Sarah dishes the dirt on her start, life on Degrassi, and next season.
You started your acting career playing Young Nala when the Lion King was on Broadway. Was it hard to transition from theater to television?
It is somewhat of a difficult transition. Just because when you are trained for theater you are so used to making your actions bigger, you're exaggerating everything, speaking very loudly...and in television, it's much more discrete acting where you're showing emotions through your eyes and though small facial expressions. But all in all, I had great support from those around me. Coming on Degrassi was just amazing because they were so supportive and everything. So, I grew into that in a very good learning environment.
What's your favorite thing about being on Degrassi?
It's the people I work with. We work with some amazing directors, production people, actors...so it's really a learning experience for all of us. We learn from each other. Everyone's really positive about everything. So, I think that's got to be the best part about working on Degrassi.
Are you at all similar to your character, Liberty?
Yeah, I'm a very driven, independent person. I'm very stong, like Liberty is. But I would say I have a bit more fun than she does (Laughs). I don't take myself as seriously as she does. But there is definitely similarities between us.
What was your first reaction whe you found out Liberty was pregnant?
As an actor, it is a really great experience to be able to have a more dramatic role, but at the same time, I know Degrassi has always been tackling issues that many other television shows wouldn't. So, it was a good opportunity for me and I think a good opportunity for Degrassi to showcase that on the show. [It] shows teens what's happening and to, hopefully, support people going through it that are. So, I think Degrassi is at the forefront of not sugar coating issues that real teens are experiencing.
