Console Review: Nintendo DS Lite

A large list of gripes is still prevalent. The Game Boy Advance cart slot is the biggest issue. Photos have a hard time indicating how far they stick out from the bottom of the Lite. You can see half the cart protruding when playing a GBA title, which is simply inexcusable. A cover for the port comes with the console for when you don't have a GBA game to play. Also, the console still doesn't go into sleep mode when closing the lid when playing GBA games.

For all of the changes made to the exterior, nothing has been done to improve the inner workings. When editing something as simple as the time in the interface, you need to shut down the console and restart completely. It still doesn't recognize games in either slot if they're not in the console when it's turned on. In other words, if you need to change some settings and then put a game in, you'll need to reset for the console to pick it up. Also, the annoying epilepsy warning upon booting a DS game still can't be turned off even though every game comes with the same warning in the package.

By far the most ridiculous overlooked feature is the option to change the brightness when you're playing a game. You need to do this in the interface. There's not a single way to adjust the brightness other than this. Beyond all the marketing hype about a bright screen, the extra battery life could come in handy if you can't quit your game to lower the setting. Even the GBA SP had this feature, and it's inexcusable for the DS Lite not to.

While the annoyances are still there, there's little question that this is the best way to play DS titles. The feel of holding this console is almost transparent. You won't know it's in your hands. For the untrained eye, it's hard to even tell it's a video game system in the first place. It's a gorgeous piece of hardware, and the only way you should playing DS games.
