But guess what, Jose was right! He got the ball rolling. He made people pay attention. And at every new development what Jose postulated has been confirmed.

The bottom line is that Jose was — and is — right, and his detractors have been wrong. A lot of people owe him an apology.

The Media Coverage. Despite having several years to bone up on the issue there is still a frightening lack of understanding with regards to the issue of PEDs in sport.

Listening and reading from a wide range of sources on Wednesday you would get the impression that HGH is some kind of new-fangled substance that athletes have turned to since the recent inception of MLB’s drug testing policy.

I’ve been writing this for years; HGH has been around and has been used by athletes for 20 years. Fans, sports writers, editors, and ballplayers need to accept this. Just because you haven’t heard of it until recently doesn’t mean HGH hasn’t been around and hasn’t been used for a long time.

It’s kind of like discovering a “new” band only to find out that they’ve been around for 15 years. Just because you were not aware of them doesn’t mean that they didn’t have any hit songs before you ever heard of them. Kind of…

HGH is undetectable in a urine test. Baseball players want an edge, don’t want to get caught and have their urine tested. Therefore, HGH is the perfect option for those baseball players who want an edge.

ESPN.com posted a survey that asks people to “vote” with regards to certain issues that surround the Grimsley situation. The questions in this survey reveal this inadequate grasp of the subject matter.

Here are some of the questions.

"Which scandal will have a bigger impact on the future of steroids in baseball, Barry Bonds or Jason Grimsley?"

This is the same scandal. It started with Balco and Victor Conte. He gave the feds Patrick Arnold the Illinois chemist/juicer/Internet guru who developed “the clear.” Arnold plead guilty and gave up Grimsley. The common thread here is I.R.S. agent Jeff Novitsky who broke the Balco case and who is still on the scene.

When will the Steroid Era end and a new era begin, within the next two years, by 2010 or not in the foreseeable future?

When the steroid era began, HGH was already in the mix. People lumped in HGH with the steroids and other PEDs because they didn’t understand the distinction between the two, and that the two were frequently used in conjunction.  And it's more than possible that there are other drugs being used that we don't know about yet.  There are two eras, the one before PEDs and the one after. Pandora’s Box has been opened and sports will never be the same, especially baseball.

Jose Canseco was laughed at when he wrote his book. But the truth is on his side. Canseco's testimony was reliable to me because he did what very few others were willing to do: He named himself as a user.
Baseball is way behind on this, because it wanted to be. It gave the players a mile-long advantage in a two-mile race. I don't think anyone has realized what this scandal means. It could kill the sport. But baseball insists on treating it like a rash.

I think the risk to the sport is if they came clean and tested for all they could and suspended everyone caught with the thorough testing. By having it in the papers as yesterday's news, it is not considered by most to be effecting the game they are watching today. The baseball fan is willing to put it out of their mind when watching the show. I know they are probably out there tonight at Yankee Stadium, but I won't let my thoughts of "who done it" ruin the game. It is not a concious decision, just the way the mind works. It is not like they are wearing scarlet letters.
