Nintendo DS Review: Magnetica

There are a number of options for setting up a match, making this two-player portion of the game a lot of fun. Besides, cracking jokes about "losing your marbles" isn't very funny by yourself.

There are three choices for single-player action: Challenge, Quest, and Puzzle. Challenge Mode is your basic endless mode. Marbles never stop, not until you clear level 99. Every ten levels you get a rocket and detonator — two power ups you will need to continue. A new colored marble is introduced every couple levels to add to the difficulty.

Quest mode is structured much like Zuma, where you have a specific number of marbles to destroy. Each level has different winding rails that twist and overlap. The levels that have two or three points to launch from really changes things up. And mini-bosses in a puzzle game? Yes, please.

In all the game has 60 different missions in Quest Mode. It will take a while to clear all of them, as they get pretty challenging.

Lastly, there is Puzzle mode. Here you forgo the timer altogether. There are a set number of marbles on the playfield, and you only have a couple marbles to launch at them. You have to think about how to destroy all marbles and leave none left over. This mode contains another 60 stages to clear.

Adding to the game play, the game supports the Rumble Pack, and uses it liberally. Considering Rumble is something out of the ordinary for a puzzle game, this feels great and adds to the experience. Your DS will pulse faster and faster when you are close to "game over," for example.

The only downfall here is that this is a good puzzle game on a platform with a bevy of good puzzlers. Magnetica may well get lost in the pack. That's too bad, because, as any Zuma addict will tell you, there is never enough!

Puzz Loop might not have caught on in the US, where Zuma popularized the recipe, but Magnetica has enough twists and turns to not be labeled a "clone."

Magnetica is rated E (Everyone) by the ESRB.
