Concert Review: Blues Traveler, Cleveland Ohio (May 26, 2006)

What can I say about Brendan Hill (drums, percussion)? This man has some endurance. He played for all but about five minutes of the hour and a half concert. He also founded the band that would become Blues Traveler, which was originally called Establishment, when he was just 13 years old. He has been part of this band for 22 years.
One of the best songs was possibly their biggest hit, "Run Around," off their fourth album which was aptly named Four. It opens with probably one of the best known harmonica intros after Billy Joel's "Piano Man." It is a more up-tempo piece that heavily features the harmonica.
Another song they played was titled "Money Back Guarantee." This song is a ballad that is a real masterpiece about growing up and I can relate to it. But no concert is complete without its cover song. I was rather impressed with their version of "Devil Went Down to Georgia," originally a Charlie Daniels' Band song. I know how difficult it is to sing and play the stringed instruments' solos in the original version. I can only imagine how difficult it would be with a wind-powered instrument, but that is exactly what Brother John did with his harmonica, he played the famous fiddle solos. It was certainly something to see and hear.
Maybe one of the neatest things about Blues Traveler is how they interact with their fans. They did a record signing almost immediately after they got off stage. I began a conversation with a band member at one end and continued it with the different members on the way down the table. This was different than any record signing I have been to before. You can tell they really value their entire fan base, and that is a big part of what made Blues Traveler such an enjoyable concert experience.
