TV Review: The Apprentice 5 - Episode 14

I wasn't expecting much from this latest episode of The Apprentice as it's basically just setting things in place for next week's season finale. And, sure enough, I wasn't delivered much. So, no recap/review this week.

Oh, okay, since you're here and reading and all...
The Apprentice
The show opened with Roxanne and Allie getting fired once again. Been there, done that! Lee and Sean, the only two remaining candidates, were awaiting the return of one of the girls to the suite. Lee was already chowing down and Sean, perhaps the more mannerly of the two, decided against waiting.

After all, his Tammy is gone and he felt her firing was the work of Roxanne and Allie. They received a phone call instructing them to head to the Boardroom immediately. Of course, they had no clue both women had been fired, so they fussed while dressing to meet Trump. Once there, he gave them the news they were the final two. So, it's the Politician against the Brit, friend against friend.

LeeTrump told them they were about to undertake the hardest task in the fifteen-week long interview. They would have to select a team of three to lead in the task from previous candidates and meet Trump in the morning.

Little did they know that all their former rivals for the position were waiting for them at the suite. Woohoo, a par-tay! All of the former candidates were vying to be on the teams. Sean had his team selected — Tammy (of course), Andrea, and Tarek. Other than Lenny as a definite, Lee seemed a bit more undecided with his decision. He finally settled on Lenny, Roxanne, and Pepe.

Pepe? I had forgotten he existed! Was it the second week that he went? Yikes! I personally have some doubts about Lee's team. I know Lenny is fiercely loyal to him and that's why he was chosen. But Lenny is abrasive, falls back on his "I'm Russian; I didn't know" bit too much and he could be a detriment. Why Roxanne and Pepe, I haven't a clue.

The teams had a choice of two fund-raising, celebrity-laden tasks. They had to manage all aspects — business, creative, and logistics. Sean, whose team became Synergy, took the BareNaked Ladies (rock group) performance at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. He only got that as Lee handed it over to him, taking a celebrity hockey game at Chelsea Piers instead. It was an act of good will or perhaps politics on Lee's part.

I never thought Lee deserved to win. When Lenny was deservedly on the chopping block and twisted Lee into agreeing to take the fall for him, Trump praised Lee's "integrity".

I thought Trump was nuts. I would have fired Lee right then, for putting his own peculiar relationship with Lenny ahead of the good of the team; misreporting Lenny's culpability in a loss to the Board, and for being a sucker; Lenny would've thrown Lee under the bus were the tables turned.

That said, watching Lenny come in and take over Lee's team last night was hilarious.

Although I think Sean would be the weakest winner to date, he sure deserves it over Lee.

Personally, I am rooting for Sean to win. I like him more than Lee. Plus, Lee's team just doesn't seem to be doing as good of a job as Sean's.

But, still, anything could happen. In the past, the team that seemed to be doing a worse job than the other has ended up winning. It all depends on how the final results turn out.

But still, I must say that Lee's team was somewhat laughable. Lenny I kind of get, but Pepe? I know Lee is going for people who like him and won't stab him in the back, but at the same time you also want strong players on your side. And Pepe was fired pretty early in the game. My fiance and I were watching this, and when Pepe got picked we both looked at each other thinking "What the hell?" and commenting on how he was fired so early on. We then laughed when Trump, Carolyn, and George had basically the same reaction. They had to look at Trump's notes just to remember Pepes name! That was kind of funny.

Sean's team does seem to be a lot stronger. I do not like Andrea either, but Sean always seemed to get along with her, and she does have many strengths. So, as long as he can get along with her and she can work well with this team, that's what is most important. Of course, her whole blood coughing epiosde is not good, and could leave Sean in a vonurable position. I hope he can pull through.

I am rooting for Sean as I just think he is better than Lee overall. Lee is more of a politician. He's good at simply weaseling his way out of bad situations. He's had some good moments, but he's done more bullet dodging than strong competing in my opinion.

It will be interesting to see how things turned out. I have not voted on who should win as of yet, but I may do so. I would like Sean to win. Plus, the possibility of winning $30,000 is nice as well.

And my poor old namesake Brent standing around waitng for someone to talk to him or even acknowledge him as something other than an obstacle on the way to the beer.

I like Sean's team a lot better than I liked Lee's. Lee seemed to let Lenny do his thinking for him on team selection. Then again it was a weak group to choose from, almost as bad as the Booksmarts-Streetsmarts crew. Sean seemed to get the best of the lot and left Lee with Lenny and the dregs. Lee's ideas for the hockey fundraiser were strictly bush league. Want to make money at the receptions - see if you can't offer a seat on each team's bench (as a spectator) in a silent auction. As for Sean, going with Tammy to talk over the menu while a major meeting was taking place was a bad idea, but having Andrea go away (for very good reasons) without knowing all the details about what she was working on could be a crippler.

Sight of the night - Carolyn laughing at Lee's selection of Pepe. My God I'm in love!!!!

I actually feel sorry for Trump this time out. He's stuck between choosing the constant suck-up who isn't nearly as smart as he thinks he is and the metrosexual that talks like Robin Leach who seems more interested in getting it on with Tammy than getting the job. Maybe next week we'll find out Andrea has been diagnosed with a terminal disease, Trump will pull a Make-A-Wish Foundation, and hire her instead of these two clods.

Even better, Brent snaps during the big on-stage reunion of the past season's contestants, pulls out a gun, and goes a killing spree. I could see him doing it.

"Even better, Brent snaps during the big on-stage reunion of the past season's contestants, pulls out a gun, and goes a killing spree. I could see him doing it."

Or he will just start dancing horribly like he did during that one task where they were promoting that razor or whatever.

Ah, seeing Brent on this episode brought back memories (even if they were only from a couple of months ago). The guy was kind of a disaster, but I still feel that no one ever really gave him the time of day to prove himself in any capacity.

At any rate, the finale should be interesting. I know I've said this a couple of times before in articles from previous epiosdes, but I'd love to see Trump not hire anyone from this season's team, and instead hire Rebecca from last season. But, if he does hire one of the two guys, I'm rooting for Sean.

uao - I don't think Lee has what it takes for the job. He's impressive at 22 years old, but that's about it. I'm not thrilled with either of the final two, not at all.

Dynamo - I've watched each season since the show's inception. I don't believe I've ever seen Carolyn crack up like she did over Pepe. When he was in the suite pre-being chosen, I couldn't even place him. "Did I ever say 'Pepe, you're fired!' - I don't remember it!"

#8 — May 30, 2006 @ 22:40PM — Jackie [URL]

Brent! I thought of you when I saw poor left-out Brent, still the puppy-dog who wants to be accepted. ;-)

Of course, reminded by name only!

Pepe who? Was there a Pepe in this season? Was he the mascot?

#9 — May 30, 2006 @ 22:42PM — Jackie [URL]

Foywonder - I thought he had a lot of talent when the season first aired. I think what he had was a lot of personalities and a few characters, not necessarily talent.

This site is really funny! I feel quite sorry for Andrea, and I was really surprised how rather callously Tammy responded to her. Tammy just said something to the effect of: "I have a list of stuff we need picked up--Can you get it on the way back from the doctors?" The poor woman is coughing blood, and she asks her to run errands?! There should have at least been someone from the show to take her to the doctor's. I also sgree with what someone stated earlier that Sean seems more interested in Tammy than the task at hand. How many of these Apprentices have been really great? The only one I have seen in any strong capacity since winning is Bill Rancic--and no one else. Trump really should just hire Rebecca from last season--she was 10X stronger than either of these two duds.

Lee seems to have handed the team over to Lenny, which does not give me a very safe feeling. I tend to lean toward Lee, but you have to wonder about a guy who seemed bent on filling his team with nothing but screw-ups (with the possible exception of Roxanne).

I've never quite warmed to Sean. I think he's a fake, starting with the British accent -- which is obnoxiously over-pronounced and over-the-top. I bet you anything he's from New Jersey.

Enough with all this Rebecca, Rebecca, Rebecca -- people are still just licking their wounds over the fact that Randall, thrown a curve by Trump, stood up for himself and his achievement under pressure. I still admire him for it.

Of the previous apprentices, Bill Rancic for some reasons remains the Trump poster boy, although, outside of his telegenic good looks, it's never real clear why. The guy from the second season with the military background was equally impressive; so was the "book smarts" girl from the third season who stayed up all night to deliver a knockout Pontiac ad. I'd like to see them in the boardroom occasionally.

"Enough with all this Rebecca, Rebecca, Rebecca -- people are still just licking their wounds over the fact that Randall, thrown a curve by Trump, stood up for himself and his achievement under pressure. I still admire him for it."

I admit that when Randall snubbed her, I was upset and irritated at the time (to the point where I stopped liking him, as I had otherwise been rooting for him).

However, I have long since gotten over that. My only reason for mentioning her now is simply because I do think that she was a lot stronger than pretty much all of the candidates from this season, including Sean and Lee.

Plus, it would make for one heck of a shocker finale. Even if she doesn't come back, it would be interesting to see Trump not hire anyone.

Every season they seem to change things up a bit. First there were exemptions for winning project managers, then the exemptions were on a voting basis, now they are gone completely. There have been multiple firings which were unheard of until last season (and that time when 4 people got fired at once was a shocker).

They keep trying to change things up to keep them interesting. So, the possibility of no one being hired, two people being hired, or a stronger candidate from a previous season being hired is not something that I could 100% rule out (granted, these things seem unlikely, but not impossible). If these things don't happen this season, I wouldn't totally rule them out as a possibility for the future.

It wouldn't surprise me if at some point in an upcoming season, to keep things interesting, if there is a time where both teams give really bad performances (regardless if one team did worse than the other or not) that Trump ends up firing someone from each team. They have to do something to keep things fresh and surprising.

Trump is waaaaaay too much of a businessman to change the rules of the game and hire someone from last season. That's just stupid. Everyone would feel cheated -- and rightly so -- and it would kill the show.

The only way he would fire both Sean and Lee is if they both screwed up badly -- which is not going to happen. If the past seasons are any indicator, both will do an at least marginally good job, enough to keep the "big surprise" at least somewhat suspenseful.
